Road conditions

Hi all, Cheryl & I are preparing to spend some time in the Gippsland area. Wondering if anyone has any knowledge of what the road between Lakes Entrance & Mallacoota is like. Not so much the surface but how twisty and hilly is as we are pulling a 23 Ft van. We may leave it at Lakes Entrance and pick it up on our return. Any feedback would be much appreciated Thanks Brian & Cheryl

Hi guys, the road to 'Coota from Lakes is generally hilly, being the Pacific highway it has a fair share of heavy vehicles using it. In particular you should watch for log jinkers heading to the timber mills anywhere between Lakes Entrance and Mallacoota (both directions) Orbost, Cann River come to mind. The highway is fairly narrow and overtaking lanes are few and far between, if you have a cb radio it would help to assist yourself and truckies. The drive is lovely so take the time to enjoy visiting the little towns off the highway, ie, Nowa Nowa, Orbost, (perhaps divert then to seaside town of Marlo on Bass strait and on to Croajingalong NP, Cape Conron etc and come back out on the Pacific highway before Cann river.

All of the above is doable with a van, but yes, it is hilly in places and definately narrow roads. I guess it all depends on how long you would stay at Mallacoota if you decide to take it or not. I lived in the area for many years and highly recommend a visit.

cheers

please do not add to Victoria's tax collection service as whilst the area seems remote it has an active police presence, albeit hidden!

ozi2 has said it all, road is hilly and windy with not alot of places to overtake. It has alot of heavy vehicels that use the road. But well worth the trip up that way lots to see and do.

Hello there

Not sure what the conditions are like now but the council caravan at Mallacoota is majic, make sure you get a terraced site overlooking the lake.
