Try Warra rest area, it is about 40k west of Dalby on the highway, you can freecamp behind the old railway station. no shower but clean toilet.

It is on RHS of road heading west

Jazzin Around also told me about Cecil Plains about 40 ks south of Dalby, then after that Millmerrin, both sound interesting, have some good choices so far.

The Dalby tourist park advertises $22 per night for an unpowered camp site. $28 for a powered one. I will see if there are any others.

Pioneer Caravan Village advertises just $27 per night for a powered site, no mention of unpowered.

Can't afford those Jack, out of my price range.. Maybe one night at the unpowered site but thats all.

HW, I tell you what, if you've got a map, dig it out & I will tell you one lovely place to go & stay for a while, you will need at least two nights there but wont regret it.

Its national park, so has a fee per person of $5.15 per night & the main camping site is a lovely large, mostly flat grassed area WITH HOT SHOWERS AND FLUSHING TOILETS....You need to put coins in the showers there, $2 or $3 gets you a lovely shower and the facilities are good.

Bunya mountains is truely a lovely place to visit, you will be surrounding by Kangaroos & other wild-life and theres some lovely walks, one of which is reasonably flat. Its well worth the look. STAND BY for some more directions.

Lake Broadwter S.W. of Dalby 30km?? about.

Take The Moonie Highway over The Condamine River, look for a Brown Tourist sign on the right about 10km past the River.

Hot and Cold Showers good Toilets, and firewood. (Sometimes) Generators allowed. Best during the week.

$5.50 per night for a campsite. Very Good value. Would be getting cold there now.

I'm camped just down the hill from that now Jack, was talking about that tonight at happy hour with other campers. Bit worried though whether Myrtle would get up there, she's not too happy with hills. Gets the hiccups.

HW, Its really not that bad on the main road in, the back road in is alot steeper and windy. You would want to head straight to the main camp Dandabah camping area. I would like to post some pics for you but cant work out how.

Its one of my favourite spots, can be a bit cold, but probably not too bad in may.

Sounds good haji-baba, How far off the main road is it. I don't want to travel 20 ks or so in and find I'm the only one there and have to travel the same out again. Also how do you go about paying, is there someone there.
A fellow camper here was telling me about it tonight but said I would probably have to pay at the info centre at dalby or similiar. Is that right. He said it is a great bird watching area.

HW, Let me tell you, ITS WONDERFUL FOR WILD-LIFE, Birds, kangaroos & many others too. Its absolutely wonderful.

NOW, when I lasted camped there, about 3 years ago, there was SELF-REGISTRATION at the main camp, which is the one with the HOT SHOWERS Etc. Let me check their website & get back to you shortly. The other two camping areas do NOT have the hot showers, so its definately Dandabah where you want to go & the camping area is right next door to the Rangers Registration & main office. Theres also a small community of Log Cabins, a little shop & restuarant. You may struggle with internet reception at the main camping spot but if you drive just a couple of hundred metres up the hill from there, you will get reception. I DID 3 YEARS AGO.

Here's the Google Maps link.... Biggenden to Dalby via Bunya Mountains

It's not that far from either Kumbia or Dalby so may be suitable for a stop rather than Kumbia or Dalby or both.

Stayed there a few years ago and can confirm it's everything the other posts suggest. It's quite popular so I can't imagine you'd be alone.

That would be the dandahbah camping area Jack .... If it that the one you are thinking of it 567 in camps 6 book not sure if it in camp 4 ...Marj could be.... It called Dandabah campground not sure what it like after all the rain ....

It's 10 ks to the river, 10 ks to the turnoff, 10 ks down the road, honesty box at the grounds as you drive in, resident ranger,
and local residents nearby, so you won't be lonely.

Good road all the way, dead flat, probably a bit up and own over the black soil.

All very laid back and very pleasant.

We took a group of caravanners to the Chinchilla Melon Festival mid February and then on to the Lake for a few days and then up to The Bell Show for the last week end in Feb.

All good fun and also did two tours through the local forestrys for about 200 ks each tour. Kept all our mob occupied and sober.

Thanks for the map jimricho. You are right mate, I doubt very much that she would be alone, it can get quite busy up there, but at the same time still remain special.

HW, Okay it would seem they have changed their booking ways. You use to be able to just self register up there but now they require a telephone booking or internet booking to stay. Its quite an easy form online & for 2 nights it would be $10.30 (plus the coin you need for the showers). I could book it for you but I don't have any of your details OR you could call them on the telephone, Ive done that before for other Queensland sites and they just grab your name, address, telephone number & rego number, THEN when you get to the ranger station you can fill out the form & make payment & drop it into the rangers box.

I vaguely remember their website saying that you had to make an internet booking last time I went there but as I didnt know when I was going to be there I just rolled into Dandabah & completed the self registration docket, dropped my money in, set up camp & went and had a HOT SHOWER. I would probably do that again & if they won't allow it, then drive to the top of the hill (just a few hundred metres from Dandabah) and make the telephone booking from there.

Confusion. My alone comments was about the lake Broadwater site.
Have checked my book its 516 in camps 4.
Went online to the site you gave me Jack. it says steep and windy and only for small vehicles. Just how bad is it. Yes, noticed you have to register elsewhere first.

HW, If you are coming in from the Kumbia end then its a piece of cake in my humble opinion. There are a couple of spots where the road is a little narrow but its not a problem & you've probably negotiated worse on your way to woolies back home. If you were coming up the mountain the back way, then thats got alot more corners & is steeper because it climbs the mountain quicker but from the Kumbia end its more gradual.

Seriously though, these are the sorts of places you need to stop at whilst travelling, they are low cost, generally safe AND so worth it. I've been through that way several times & each time have stopped in and camped there, not always at the main camp either.

I stayed at the tourist park by the creek and bridge near the centre of town.
They charged $16 for an unpowered tent site, although I did have power because their unpowered sites are still recovering from the floods which put about 5 metres of water over the park.
Everything was neat and clean, they have a camp kitchen/bbq area and a fire pit for bonfire. I caught up with my washing as I'd been on the road for 5 days. I also needed a rest from the road conditions.
Every now and then you'll need a park to catch up with personal hygiene and washing and stuff like that. Showers can be had at many roadhouses, but the washing also has to be done from time to time.
