Hi guys if you havn't been to eungella before might be a good idea to drive up first, very steep and depending what size van you have you could have some trouble. We're from mackay and have an 18ft van and noway would we take that up there. There is a great spot about 50ks out of mackay called kinchant dam very easy to get into and a great spot if you like the fishing also a good cheap park at mirani its council run or it was last time we were home 18 months ago have to book and if its cane season its usually full but worth a try. Hope this is some help.
Hi Peter and Rosemary. I agree with colsa.... very steep and probably very cold up there. I would go for Elphingstone myself. It should be full , and the camping area is lovely. Ollie would have a ball. Very easy to get to..nice and flat. Enjoy.
Hi P & R, a good but little known spot is Boynedale Bush Camp, backs onto Awoonga dam, heaps of barra being caught there still and it's a free camp. It's off the Monto road out from Calliope, no crocs and if you want toget a barra to keep, there are stillsome to be had in the Boyne River, a mate and I got about 20 in the boat last week but all were released. Also I was talking to the fella that runs the barra hatchery in Gladstone last week and he says that there are some redclaw showing up out at Boynedale now
Thanks all will give lake elphinstone a try and Boynedale sounds pretty good as well Had an email from friends also on the road and they are staying at a little known camp called bivouac junction $70 a week and a great camp area
The road up to Eungella is steep, big trucks get up there, but you know your tugs capabilities. Theres a caravan park right at the top of the hill with the best view we have ever had from our campsite. Theres free-camping a little further inland, and a lake or dam there with fish to be caught. We really enjoyed it.
