National Parks

I've often wondered why National Parks are called National when they seem to all be state run.

In NSW "National" Parks the charge for camping (if you have a parks pass ($30 to over$150 depending on which parks you are intending to use) can be $12 per person, and the amenities may be as minimal as a smelly toilet. At that price i'd rather pay $25 for a powered site in a caravan park! Some parks are cheaper or free, but becoming rare.

We just spent a night at Ormiston gorge NP in NT for $6.60 per person, and it was an excellent campground, great amenities including hot showers, and of course right at Ormiston Gorge. We met the GN park manager who is employed to look after the campground and enjoys the job immensely. He recommended this kind of employment  to other retirees.

Other states could learn from this example, IMHO.

In NSW I feel the dark greens who run NSWNP don't want you in their Park  Every time I visit our local parks the camping area has been reduced  the facilities less and less and the cost keep going up.  Needless to say their taxpayer funded budget keeps increasing  year after year .  Now they want to create Marine parks . If their management is anything to go by then the marine environment is in dire straits .

In S.A. you can buy a Multi National Parks pass and this entitles you to free entry into the park and five night's camping we often go to Deep Creek National Prk not far from Victor Harbour and the stringypark camp ground has hot showers and flush toilets. Ayearly pass will cost you $110 but I believe you can get 3 monthly ones don't know the price of these though. Helena.

I don't think I've ever paid to camp in National Parks. As far as I'm concerned, if there's no-one there to collect the money, they don't get it.

I agree Wombat, we went to a NP just north of New Italy late last year and they wanted $27pn.  There were no amenities to speak of (one long drop that you wouldn't even bother opening the door of) so we went down the road a bit to Corindi Beach Van Park and had beautiful views, spotless amenities and teriffic staff and yes it was $27pn.
