Tourist Bus Fire - Kangaroo Island

We were on this bus when it caught fire, on Kangaroo Island a couple of years ago, exit door was jambed and we were all lucky to escape.

The final result......although a number of us suffered smoke inhalation and once couple got cut getting out of a smashed window, everyone survived;

Not the type of thing that you want to write home about when your on holidays...

Did you lose any gear or were you just getting transport to another part of KI?

Yes it was pretty scary FF, especially when the bus was full of smoke and the driver couldn't get the door open, no "kick out" fire exit on them, only these stupid little hammers that "bounce" off the tinted glass. Anyway although a couple managed to break one window and get out, the drive eventually managed to release the door manually after he found the manual release at the bottom of the steps. Smoke was reported to him earlier, he re-assured us it was "only oil" burning off the engine and continued driving.

It was part of a day tour Gubby which included ferry transport over and back to the mainland and to our mainland accomodation, the tour company to their credit refunded our payment for the tour. Many lost expensive camera's and other gear in the fire, in the panic to get out they left them behind, lost of screaming etc during the saga, I think many thought we were going to die. Glad I kept mine with me otherwise you would not be seeing the shots I took.

This is another couple of fire shots, not mine they are off Caravaners Forum, one of the Vic bushfires taken by a CF member and the other three at Banka Banka Station (NT) taken by the past manager. Not for competition as they are not mine, for interest only;

I don't have any history on the Vic fire one, except that it was near a caravan park, not sure what the outcome was.

The Banka Banks one was where pressure from opening a petrol container sprayed fuel and vapour which ignited from the pilot light of a gas fridge being used outside the door.  A couple and there two children managed to escape but the father and mother suffered serious burns and were hopitalized.   The mother suffered burns trying to put out the flames on her husband who was alight.

I remember the Banka Banka one Vic, it was on the news. Looks like a Windsor Rapid like our new one. They were lucky indeed mate, good pics.

Yes it was a Windsor Rapid FF, he was opening Jerry Cans that had built up pressure to fill his generator (see in pic) unfortunately it was near his outside fridge which was run off gas with a pilot light. They were lucky but what a way to finish a holiday. I think originally he was flown to Alice Springs hospital but then was transferred to a burns unit in one of the southern capital cities as his burns were quite severe.
