Vin plates

hello all
I recently had purchased a caravan that had the vin plate weights altered by the dealer to a weight 400kgs less than what it actually weighed. Unfortunately I believed the dealer and took the van but on the travels it felt heavy and pulled the prado.
Does anybody know the legalities of this
Ken

Contact the ACCC and seek proper advice, I don't think we have any lawyers on here

I would report it to RTA or VicRoads - wherever you are . On Monday morning .

As well as Dept of Fair Trading or equivilent in your state . As Wombat said.

Hi ,as the other replies say, contact your RTA,Dept Consumer Affairs in your state ASAP.

No-one can alter a Vin plate even the RTA.If there are any changes it has to be by a Modification plate not altering the Vin plate.

Hope all works out for you in the end.

G'day Ken, ditto the comments already posted re RTA, consumer affairs etc.

Have you checked your registration papers showing the weight of van compared to the VIN numbers?

Goodluck with a successful outcome

cheers

Complaints to Vicroads, Jow Blow or Harry Houdini won't do you any good unless you're armed with the facts and can back them up. Otherwise it's just conjecture.
What has actually happened?
Who changed what?
What were the original figures?
How have you detirmed that the amended weight is incorrect? "but on the travels it felt heavy and pulled the prado"  doesn't cut it I'm affraid.
The only way to actuaqlly know for sure is to strip everything out. Empty all tanks including HWS etc and then put the van over a weighbridge.
If the true TARE is within around 30 - 50Kg of that shown on the Vic Plate, then all is OK. If not then you'll have some ammunition to work with, and advise can then be given on what action can be taken.
Is the manufacturer a RVMAA member? Is the dealer a member of a State or National Industry Association such as CTIAV, CCIA, CRVA etc?
Cheers, Ozjohn.
