Cindy mentioned in her latest mailbag about a story on the magical waters at the Moree Spa. Have also seen other people mention it and bumped into people in my travels who were staying over night there.
I can't find the original story of Cindy's, must have been away when it was put up. Have scrolled through the archives to no avail and popped it in search.
Who has been there, what is it like and is it in a actual caravan park where you have to stay over night or is it open to the public.
Would like to try it next time I pass through Moree so all info will be helpful.
I was looking yesterday in google for a list of thermal pools/ spas/bores/hot springs etc around Aus. Have often heard various ones mentioned on the forum and wondered if there might be a list somwhere.
I used to got to Moree for work from time to time before I retired.
There is a public pool which I didn't use - looks from outside like a regular council pool, but uses the thermal water. There is a free camp at the Moree Showgrounds, and another about 8 ks out of town.
I used the pool at the motel I stayed at, and the water is warm and fabulous.
There is at least one caravan park with thermal pools ( on the southern outskirts of Moree, on the corner of Newell Highway and Amaroo Drive. )
Moree is on my list of the first places to visit this year, and I can't wait- and it will be more than an overnighter. I love the place.

I stayed at this caravan park for 2 days and they have a pool and I also tried the town pool. It was crowded with Japanese tourists so I didn't stay long. The park pool was lovely but not as hot. The park was ok too. If ever I get an opportunity to soak in a thermal pool I take it. I have done Mataranka and Katherine, Anna Plains Station and a couple in New Zealand. It certainly soothes the aches. I didn't do the one at the Mungaranee Roadhouse on the Birdsville Track. It's another reason to travel, from hot pool to hot pool.

Another bore at Pilliiga - 60km west of Wee Waa, freepark area as well. Can use dirt road from Baradine if the weather has been fine. Burren Junction is 40km (dirt rd) from Pilliga. Otherwise have to go via Wee Waa. Water temp a little hotter at Pilliga than Burren but both enjoyable. If you are at Burren a noodle is handy to have. Pool is about 6ft deep.
We have stayed at the CP that Crusin Granny spoke of. ie on the southern outskirts of town.
I think that there were three hot pools of varing temperatures & a cold pool as well.
They were clean & quite well presented. Not crowded.
There has been problems with the locals in the past but I understand that that is no longer the case. It was certainly OK when we were last there.
We'll stay there again on the next trip past that way.
On the subject of hot pools .. There is one on the outskirts of Lightning Ridge .. A public pool very quiet.... not too many tourists at the Ridge when we were there.
We leave next weekend for a two week trip from Hoppers Crossing to Eppalock to Tocumwal to Dubbo to Moree to Bundaberg to Frasers Island then to the Gold Coast where we'll stay for a week before heading home. I am REALLY looking forward to staying in that caravan park in Moree. The idea of having a nice hot soak in those pools is very appealing after the cold weather we're having here in Melbourne. Can't wait
The caravan park in Moree you are after is the Gwydir Caravan Park cnr Newell Hwy & Amaroo Dr - it is a little on the expensive side around $26-27/nt but well worth it. They have about 5 pools of varying temps., plus a cooler pool. When we came through Moree a few weeks ago on our way to Tassie, we noticed that the main town pools were closed - looked very dismal - and they were up for auction.
Will be calling in to Gwydir on our way back home at the end of August.
Trust this helps.

Hi Pejay,
I've had two people in the last week telling me not to stop at Moree - it's unsafe, and to drive through - they said the locals can be a bit rough.
How did you find it?
I'm really looking forward to soaking in those pools
By staying in the caravan park, we had no problems - its the only way we would stay there, and we have stopped off there quite a few times with travelling up and down to Canberra as well as this trip to Tassie.

Wow! Great lot of info here to take in, thanks everyone. Looks like a stay in the Gwydir CP may be a good shot. May well be worth paying that amount to experience it then go for some free camps after to balance it out,. Will make note of all the others too as never know where I could end up next winter.

I have friend's who live in Moree and like every town that has a high population of lets just say.... Locals ...they have some trouble but it not that unsafe that you cant stay in the town... I have been there many time never seen or had a problem ..It same as here in tamworth we have a area where the pizza drivers will not go after dark this same area if someone need a ambulance they have to go with a police escort and this is only sometimes .... but that dosent mean all the town is unsafe and this is same for moree and i am sure many other towns .... Moree is a lovely country town give it a go and enjoy what they have to offer and the hot water pool will be great for you as well...

Thank you for your replies. I like to take things as I find them and glad you both confirmed that it's quite ok. I'm sure we'll have a great time. Roll on next week - ahhhhh nice hot soak :)
If you come thru Echuca let me know and maybe catch up for a coffee with HW and me
Ken
That could be organised - will be going through on Saturday. Would that suit you and HW? Will be with my hubby (Loffty on this site). Would be great to meet.
In Qld Hepburn Spa at the bottom of Toowoomba range. I believe this is a resort type place, but don't quote me.
Mitchell in western Qld. There's a council caravan park just across the river, walking distance, which I believe is relatively cheap if you stay 3 nights, or there's a free camp a the weir.
Innot Springs, west of Ravenshoe NQ. There's a caravan park with 3 pools of different temperatures. If you don't want to pay, you can just walk up the sandy creek bed to the water, but this is a little risky as it's very very hot at the edge of the water. Once you get in deeper it's lovely...so my 'claytons' great-nephews said.
We spent a few days at the Gwydir CP. Yes the pools were very relaxing if you don't mind sharing. They were packed. The CP was a little crowded for our liking, basically couldn't roll your annexe out fully as you'd have been touching the van beside you. Suggest you take the park map & check out the site before you pay. The town itself was clean and we saw no problems. You'll enjoy the pools.
