It had been suggested to me that if an accident happened on my travels and all my paperwork was lost that I would be in a lot of trouble and that it would be useful to make copies of everything and leave them with a trusted person. I took that idea on board and instead scanned all important documents as well as front and back of my drivers license, passport, RACQ card etc. Having created a file in My Documents I then uploaded it to Docs. attached to my Gmail account and all the information will be on hand even if my laptop is also lost.
None of us ever expect to be in that position but fires have been known to totally destroy the contents of a van and this is a way to still have access to insurance documents and other vital information so necessary if such a tragedy happened.
Don't want to burst your bubble but isn't that making it all too available to hackers, (being attached to your gmail) Could see some identity theft happening easy there or am I being paranoid. Is gmail similiar to hotmail. I would rather have photocopied it all and put it in a safe deposit box ( as I suggested to my sister the other day for her important papers) or give to a trusted relative or friend. Also if your laptop is lost as in stolen won't there be a full copy for all to see there in your documents??
The thing would be to either put it all on disk or USB or whatever and either lodge it with your will (which I assume is in a safe place) and/or with your Executor. After all if the worst was to happen it's your Executor that will need all that information
Where the information is stored is the secondary point of the thread which is primarily concerned with focussing on gathering all the important information and having it readily available in an emergency.
I also have the information stored on a flash drive and am not concerned that the Gmail account could potentially be hacked, having been on the internet daily for the last fifteen years I am very well aware of that possibility.
The same fears occur with internet banking, using PayPal to pay for Ebay purchases and having your details stolen whilst using a credit/debit card in any location. There are endless possibilities of being targetted and one's own level of concern/paranoia will dictate one's own actions.
I have list of all my important "numbers" ie insurance policies, licences, passport, bank accts, credit cards, etc etc. These are listed in a password protected MS Word document. A close relative has a copy of this document.
for those that store online, usb or you own hard drive make sure when you sell the pooter you take out the h/drive and smash it with a very big hammer do the same to usb's, deleting stuff from your drive is not good enough, if I got hold of your drive or usb I can retrive most of your files and folders, so make sure you trash the media that holds your info or somebody will have it next week.
hi John, as well as back up to external hard drive, we bought a fireproof case at ALDI about 6 months ago, was $35 holds stuff a bit bigger than A4 size to a depth of about 4 inches, is VERY heavy but guaranteed for 30 mins in a fire (dont know if that warranty is any good !!!!) hope this helps, regards, gary
Warning!!!! If you're going to save and carry all your personal information with you (As we do when overseas) including photo copies of Passports etc to a UBS Stick/flashdrive or CD, then make sure it's 'Password Protected' to protect against Identity Theft etc. Cheers, Ozjohn.

Wow! I'm in trouble. I don't know where I could leave this personal stuff. I can keep it on a memory stick but then what? I can't and won't put this responsibility on to my kids.
