I just bought a VAST sat system. $600. Easy and quick to set up and great reception. (anywhere in Australia, apparently).

Have a look at iteck or brisbane satellite , Milo .

Itech includes Foxtel/Astar for around $700 . Some others are $5000 plus .

Milo darling Jacko has VAST sat TV system. Darling Jacko looked to an automatic system and after speaking with other decided on a small tripod with a classy 65cm dish. Darling Jacko loves VAST when Jacko cannot get land based TV. Darling I talk to the boys at Satplus http://www.satplus.com.au/ Jacko doesnt have to use the VAST system much as most locations get land based digital TV. Darling Jacko has an excellent TV aerial system

The Winder thing is fairly easy to fix Milo. It should just be a little bolt and spring as I fixed mine some time ago. The spring might of shot off, so look on the floor in your MH.

Regarding the TV....it all depends on where you may be traveling ? Remote areas? If so, you may well need a satellite system as there is no terrestrial signal for TV in remote areas, so you would have to get the sat dish out and tune it in to the correct satellite (Easy job after you've done it once)

I have a satellite system, but I also use the local TV in good areas.

Also, it may be beneficial to you to get a TV with a HD tuner in the TV, that way you don't have to carry the extra set top box if that is the way you wish to go.

The ones you fit on your roof and that are automatic are worth around $6,000 !!!

If you are only after the VAST system (digital free to air) there is an automatic dish for a touch over 4000 installed.

The manual dishes are pretty easy to set-up once you have a couple of practice runs, and you will find you much prefer this than using the terrestrial TV once you get used to it. It is always clear and no mucking about trying to find towers or tune channels.

I suggest you find somewhere you can have a look at how a system works.

I have had both systems, automatic and manual and found that a seperate tripod off ebay with an ex foxtel dish works better for me.

The reason for this is that thr motor home can be parked under trees while the dish can be placed seperately witha clear view of the sky. It get easier to set up the manual system every time you do it specially with a sat finder. Also if the van moved it would not affect the satellite dish.

Must admid I still have the old Aurora/Imparja system and will have to upgrade to VAST soon. Those who went to Mudgee saw my sat system and it works a treat at a fraction of the cost.

Hope this helps as another option. It is defnately better that trying to use an antenna system for free to air TV,much cheaper than an automatic sat finder system and works just as well.

Totally agree, dish on tirpod is the way to go, we are running the VAST system and it's great.

Portable dishes .

Itechworld $650 for the Vast system . $700 if you want Foxtel/Austar as well . You have to have your own Foxtel box .

Itechworld will give a pensioner discount, beware they did offer a setup for $350 online but it was for the old system, not VAST, a friend of mine nearly fell for that one, lucky she contacted me first, the sat finder they supply is very hard to use, you really need the dish set up so you can set up the sat finder they supply.

Setup below contains a very good sat finder, I have one of these that I keep as a spare in case my battery runs down on my main finder, that finder sells for $99 the one from Itechworld is sold for $30, that is why the SatPlus setup is more expensive than Itech.

And for those of you that use iPhones, there is an app that shows you where the satellite is, so you know that you can get clear line of sight, or if there is a tree in the road. Works a treat for me.

My son had that for his dish, but he has now gone back to a sat finder, said it was too hard on th iphone.

btw, if there was a tree in the road I would just drive around it !!!!!!

Yes Wombat....I would drive around the tree as well mate der.... .....but if you have parked, you can then move your tripod to WHEREVER you want it.

And the app is very very easy to use ????
And you DO NOT need to have a signal from your server. Hasn't failed me yet.

And so much cheaper than the satellite finder indicate a few posts back.

Dunco, sorry I can't agree about the cost being so much cheaper.

I do not have an iPhone, so please bear with me and correct me if I am wrong, to download the app you have to have a iPhone and server, is that correct? but to use the app you do not need a connection?

what is the cost of buying an iPhone and being connected to a server? even though you do not need the server to use the app, this cost has to come into this situation because without the iPhone and server one cannot have the app, is this correct?

My son has an iPhone and I understand he pays $79 a month, over the time one is connected to the network surely it is more expensive to have the iPhone with app's then the Sat Finder mentioned in my post below?

I have an iphone....for use to make phone calls. So to buy a cheap app is only of benefit. If you haven't got an iphone, don't get the app. Is that easy enough ?

And I also have a $25 sat finder that plugs inline and I find the satellite in less than 30 seconds. Saves $120 + for the one on ebay mate. confuse

Sorry Dunco I missed your post.

Not sure you understand where I am coming from, I don't have a iPhone so to get the app I would have to purchase an iPhone and that would be more expensive than the $120 I paid for my sat finder, I know there are sat finders for $30 but they are in my opinion not as good as the one I have.

Hello, It would be helpful if someone could actually some useful advice on the various systems instead of yacking on about nothing? There are many options and I for one would find it helpful if people could provide pros and cons of the various products out there: Eg: Intellisat Autosat 2s vs, Solosat vs Shere vs Maxview B2590 vs Vansat Bluestar vs Mecatronic vs Satking etc etc just to name a few good quality products.

I wouldn't think you will find that sort of information here Jason, as there would be few, if any who have used more than possibly one or two of the systems.

You may be better seeing if someone like Choice Magazine, or one of the caravan magazines, have done a comparison of satellite systems.

Mate, if people "yakking on about nothing" upsets you then believe me you are on the wrong forum.

If you have questions about comparisons between various Auto Satellite Dishes and/or decoders (in fact just about anything) register a free account with Whirlpool and look on the appropriate page.

Also, what did you think about Fremantle's decision to run their own fireworks display for Australia day and do you use a 15/10 amp cheater lead?

I have the ITech setup, works fine. The app I have for Android is a freebee and it allows you to pick a spot on the map then it will give you the elevation and heading to point the dish at and the skew to apply to the LNQ. (just need a good compass or compass app on the phone) Note the one I had for the iphone was fancy but the end result is no better, I set up as mentioned before then use the tune option on the vast receiver to improve the signal by minor adjustment to the dish position and elevation.
Make sure when you get one to apply for the location you will be traveling to and check your subscription every now and again. (I ended up in the Flinders Ranges with and expired subscription (they are free) but no internet to renew it. The dish folds up into its bag and lives under the bed so the larger the dish diameter and the smallest form it can be packed into are key features to look for. (some of the newer dishes can be folded) a Caravan and motor home mag last year had a comparison of what available.)

And what is the size of the dish? Generally they are too small to be of use in the inland areas, particularly the cheap ones.
