my current job is giving me the opportunity to go to remote regions in North WA via campervan. There will be 3 vehicles in total and we will spend 4 weeks in Nov travelling around the Pilbara and Kimberley. I am ecstatic for the opportunity. It also looks as if this may be a regular thing, thus extending my paid work opportunities combined with solo travel. It will be a great opportunity and if there are subsequent trips I will take the dogs.
Good for you Ellen! OK, what's the job and how do I get a start? Actually that's why I decided to do the pilot work. Travel and get paid. It hasn't all worked out according to plan, but it is still a great job I love doing. All that aside, can you tell us what you do? I'm interested in people's jobs.

I remember during the late sixties and early seventies caravans arriving at our construction camps (before the advent of eftpos) and after the bank had bought out the pays from the nearest town. You could buy most things from these van's, do a bit of gaming with a chance of luck , or get lucky with Miss Chance. The Clark River crossing between Charters Towers and Greenvale was one site, (some one wrote a song which was published) and Copeton Dam and Hillgrove were two others which come to mind.

There were a few songs about Greenvale but you are probably thinking of one of the better known ones.....either "Three Rivers Hotel" by the late Stan Coster...or... "The Ballad Of Greenvale" by Alec Beckett. BTW, I have had the pleasure of meeting Alec Beckett several times, at Country Music Festivals etc; and he is one of the most talented, unassuming and nicest blokes you could ever meet.
Hi CG - i work in health and community research for one of the uni's and am managing a large scale review of services in North WA which involves having to run around and talk to people at length.
In working out the logistics it was far cheaper to rent 3 campervans and spend a few weeks driving around. Rental per day for 3 campervans is equivalent to just one person staying in an average hotel in much of the region. Crazy. Last time I went to Port Hedland the cheapest accommodation was a fairly daggy cabin in a caravan park for $290 per night.
So I persuaded the team to put a few weeks aside and hit the road - it certainly did not take much arm twisting.
After I semi retire and hit the road full time in about Feb/March next year I hope they will still send a bit of work my way - stuff like writing submissions and reports which can be done form anywhere.
After reading Bob's post maybe I should include a chook raffle wheel in my rig and see if I can pick up a few extra pennies that way - not sure where I would source the chooks though. Maybe a 2 up set would be more practical.
The review sounds interesting and challenging Ellen, sorely needed too I would think. Being able to continue part time on the road when you semi retire.....doesn't get much better.
Great job. Having lived up in NW WA and being a regular customer of the health services, as well as working in admin at the Broome Hospital for 5.5 years, they can use all the help you can get them to provide a vital services. I might even be able to give you some tips. Safe and happy travels and don't forget to enjoy the view.
