Many moons ago ....... back as far as the mid 50's we used to travel the Putty road north-west of Sydney, from Windsor to Singleton, when it was dirt. Over the years, it was tarred but still a rotten road to travel - heaven knows how much of it I walked with car sickness, my dad used to get out and we would walk a distance whilst mum drove a little further up the road - I just could not handle all the bends. These days I have learnt not to be looking down when we are travelling windy roads, as I have been known to feel squeamish at times.
My question is ...... has anyone travelled this road of late with a caravan in tow?

I knew I had about Putty Road recently .... I have unashamedly pinched this response from another forum (dated April 2011)

I have traveled The Putty and the "Free' way To Richmond, Via Windsor, and would recomend the Putty if you want to get away from the traffic, and there is a great camping spot at Colo reserve. Turn of just up from the shop at Colo. Camp right besidethe river.The freeways are madness and the cost of these so called "free" ways puts me off.
I've travelled the Putty Rd numerous times over the last 30 years .. there's always been conjecture about the state of the road but I've never had any problems. Driving to all conditions and taking extra care at the northern bends and you shouldn't have any problems .. From Army Trucks to motorbikes I have enjoyed travelling that road. It is known for its abnormal number of motorcycle accidents, but if you do ride a bike you would soon understand the attraction it has ..
I drove the Putty Road once a week for a number of years when in the trucking business and much preferred it to the Pacific Highway.
My views haven't changed and now if we are travelling north use the Putty Road wherever possible.
We have towed three different vans along there and never had any problems whatsoever.
The shop at Colo is no more but the camping area is still there.
There is also another stop about half way along called Blackfellas Bend. There isn't much there in the way of amenities except for an area where you can light a fire but it is nice and peaceful.
There used to be a servo come shop about half way between Windsor and Singleton but it burnt down a number of years ago and they haven't rebuilt. The last available fuel stop (that I can remember) is at Colo Heights which is more expensive than either Windsor or Singleton but just a word of warning......don't eat the food there. It was absolutely atrocious last time we stopped for a bite.
Thanks folks for your imput - back in the dim dark ages we used to travel (when long trips weren't really done) from Lithgow up to Mooloolaba in Qld for holidays. We travelled the Bells Line of Rd (walked that one too, with car sickness!) then up the Putty Road. If I rememer correctly, we stopped off at Howes Valley for a morning tea stop.
Wel, I think we may give it a go come our Christmas trip, and keep my head up and not looking down - that's when I seem to run into problems with feeling yuk!!
Hey Jonathan, sounds like you were in the Army - were you posted to Singleton? Pete had some time there as well around the late '70's.

Yep Dogbox that is why I used the Putty, Sydney to Brisbane and back three times a fortnight back then. Certainly didn't have trucks like they do today. No sleeper or automatics back then AND I had an 8 month old daughter with me.
