That's very disappointing for you. What should have been a happy, exciting time was a cold, wet dismal experience.
Maybe it would have been better in warmer weather, but you'll never know.
I'd like to do Tassie sometime down the line, but I'll have to do it in warmer weather, because I've had enough of the cold in Adelaide.
I'm sorry you didn't have a good holiday. It's not always like that. Maybe your next trip should start with a map and a blank page and let the experience and the journey fill in the details for you. Set out without any expectations. After that everything will be a new experience and a total surprise. Hopefully a happy surprise. Take care and have a good rest in your garden.

I'm also sorry that you did not enjoy your trip very much.. I too would like to go to Tassie sometime I must remember to do it in the warmer months then... altho I do love the rain.... I suppose if it rained for 3 weeks I might not like it so much... I hope your garden will look beter soon....

I've taken two trips of late. One with car problems and freezing cold and wet and the next still having car issues. Sure was good to get home. But.. Ill try again a few more times.

we had quite a few problems with the tardis on this trip we too were happy when we got home
we do love travelling but getting home is nice too

Sorry you did not enjoy your Tassie experience.I lived near Savage River for two years and I appreciate your comments about the rain,bloody miserable.I know that it is wise after the event to comment,but please give Tas another go sometime.The main thing is that you are home safely.Welcome back.Cheers.Father Ted. blankstare

Don't let this one bad experience destroy Tassie for you - I have been there four times now - in summer and winter - and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's such a beautiful state with so much to see. Give it another go sometime - hopefully your experience will be better next time.

disbelief We always tell anyone coming over to visit, that the best months are Feb, March.

Spring is usually colder and wetter than winter.

This winter (and we missed most of it) has been the worst one I can remember for a long time.

Don't let it put you off, we have had some horror trips to the mainland, but still go back to the same places and thoroughly enjoy them.

Sorry to hear your Tassie visit was less than expected. We have taken a caravan over there 3 times & stayed at least thre months each time but we went from Dec to March. Weather nice that time of year & we had a great visit.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. Just a shame you didn't go in the warner months. Tassie is a beautiful state and if you don't like the rain and cold best to go after Xmas up to and including March.
I went in March on my only trip there, such a great experience can't wait to do it again.

We did a bit of research before our camper-trailer trip to Tassie, and it paid off. We got there at the end of Jan (after school hols) and left in March. The weather was mostly quite hot, and the days very long. We'd read that it rains over 300 days a year at Cradle Mtn, so booked a cabin there, and got thoroughly soaked outdoors but had a dry place to come back to. We had the most fantasic trip, and remember it very nostalgically.

Even though places are crowded at the best seasons, its worth it, bad weather can ruin a holiday.

Dont let it put you off altogether BB, hope enjoy your next trip!

Rain 300 days a year at Cradle Mountain??
Now that is an exaggeration! From our experience and local knowledge I can say it only raains twice a year.
Firstly from 1st June to 1st December and then again from 2nd December to 28th May.

What a pity that the trip was so dismal and unenjoyable. Maybe try Tassie again at a better time of the year, as it really is a great place to tour. We took the van over there for 6 months - Sept to April - and that was great. We had the occasional wet day or three, as you would expect over such a period, but even the west coast was pretty good.

So sad you didnt enjoy our beautiful state. But please come back one day. Rain and cold can spoil holidays but we have been on the mainland for holidays and also encountered horrible weather. Just the luck of the draw i'm afraid.

You have all agreed on the best time to go. But do I take my caravan over and wander around, or do I fly over, hire a camper and wander around?

yeh i guess i had built up the holiday experience a bit before we left having never been there and not knowing what to expect, car trouble and camper trouble can happen anywhere thats for sure, it wasn't the trip from hell i guess and we did get to see some wondefull places,,, yeh we'll go back again but certainly in the warmer months and now we know what to expect we'll hopefullly be better prepaired,,, but we'll get back some day and see the things we missed out on thats for sure...........

I guess you have to weigh up the costs of flying over and camper hire compared with the cost of bringing your own vehicle and van over as well as passenger fares on the Spirit of Tasmania if you sail over. When booking on the Spirit the length and height of van and vehicle affects the price too so thats something to think about as well. Hope that helps.

we went over and back with n over night cabin both ways for i think around 1500 if that helps ours was around 9 meters, if you take your own at least you have all your own stuff i guess, but then again if you hire if it breaks down you call then and get another one if it's yours you have to pay to get it fixed,, as we did and thats can be a fair chunk of cash out of your pocket

Chris, depends on how long you might go for - obviously, the longer the stay the more economic it is to take your own rig. If you fly - or go on boat without rig - you will be limited in what gear you can take. Obviously, a hire camper provides the basics, but will you be content with that?

CG, Unless you have another reason to go via Melbourne I would think the ferry will add an awful lot of extra driving time for you from SA. We went over on the ferry a few years ago (pre-van, just with the car), we worked out that for our 2 week holiday it was worth it to take the car, much less time and it wouldn't have been. Although with the overnight ferry you can take into account that you aren't paying for any accom for that night, that provides a little bit of saving.
