Get Out Of Our Home - Current Affair - 6.30PM Tonight 27.9.11

Just saw a reminder on another forum about these caravanners on Current Affair tonight at 6.30.

They returned from a caravan trip and couldn't get the tenants in their home to move out.

Happens too often Vic.   That's why I will sell rather than rent mine when I go on the road .

Cheers,

Vic, you can see it at the same time as east coasters, IF you have a sat dish connected to your tv, we often watch the 2030 movie at 1830, have the dish setup in our garage and open the garage door to watch programs early in the van

We get both programs here in the Perth burbs at 6.30 Marj (WA Time).

Wombat, no, we don't have a sat dish, might be a bit crowded in your van, but if you have the heater on and supply the drinks we'll come down!

On second thoughts, long way for a TV program! LOL !

In NSW you have to give tenants 90 days notice but if they can't find anywhere in that time then your in for a longer wait while it goes through the various reviews. May pay to send in the special negotiators after dark if there's no attempt to get a move on , surprising how fast the place empties out by morning

From what I've just seen, the owners signed a 6 month lease contract with the tenants. They were to move out the day before the owners returned home. Now they are refusing to move and it has to go to the tenancy tribunal which could take weeks.
The owners did give them an extra week when they first asked. But no more than the one week.

apparently they've applied for quite a few houses but been unsuccessful. This publicity certainly won't help their case - who would want to offer them a place to rent if you can't get them out. Viscious circle really

biggrin Heaven should be this quiet!smile

As I said, I would love to hear the other side of this story.

Sounds to me that the people have been trying to get another property, but have had no luck. Asked for an extension, got one for one week and then told "bad luck, your out on the street!"

Me, I'd tell them to shove it, (politely, of course) I'm trying my best, go live in your caravan till I can find another placeand stop annoying me.

IMO there's more to this story than was told.

Dustyhmm

Then again, we have had some tennants from hell in our properites. Would never rent again, been there, done that.

Like what Dusty? They have both done exactly what you suggest, The owners gave them an extra week then said too bad, "I want my house back"
The tenants have said Too bad, "You can live in your caravan until I find something else"
If it was my house I would want the b....y thing back too. How dare they. if they can't find another rental they will have to go live with friends or relatives until they can.
That house is legally the owners, not the tenants.

I don't think the owners have helped their cause with the publicity.

The tennants, "seem" to be trying to do the right thing. They are still paying the rent and going to the agent and asking for an extension. I would think on the face of it, that they are also asking the agent to find them another place.

The owners, IMO came across as whingeing, nagging, uncaring people.

If it was our place I would give them the opportunity  to find another place.

From our extensive experience with tennants, I would not be surprised now if they have a "real" problem on their hands and the rent could stop and a lot of rubbish be left around the property.

What goes around, comes around.evileye

I was thinking the same thing. Imagine the damage the tenants could do now, they will be so peed off about being on ACA.

When we go next year I've arranged for my son and his family to move in rent free to look after the place and pay any bills coming to the house so we dont have to worry about it... if we come back early we just move in with the kids so it will work all round really... but then, we took kids in so we have had many peoples in our home before and got on well with them all... Kyle has already suggested he do little improvements and Tia wants to do some gardening while we are away.... but when they do get a place of thier own I dont know what we'll do....

If it was understood at the beginning of the tenancy that the owners would give due notice of their return and the tenant's vacating, there should be no problem.
In most states the law applies to tenants and landlords, but subject to appeal of course, which can delay things for years.
I only saw the TV promo for the topic, but there is always 2 sides to a story.
But some tenants do take liberties with an arrangement and stretch the patience of the landlord.
I'm sure if they were in dire need someone would come forward, even state housing, to offer them something. If not permanent, then certainly temporary housing.
They would not be stranded homeless out on the street no matter what the circumstances.
I didn't see the story, but did they show the condition of the property?

Hi CG,

Yes, the place looked neat and tidy.

Lady landlord, standing across the road and screaming at the woman tenant as she got in the car.

Landlords (Lady) sounds like she phones and stalks them all the time.

As I said, would love to hear the tenants version.

I too would like to hear the other side.

Given that the current rental vacancy rates are very low (like 2-3%) in some areas, some tenants have no place to move to. From the little bit in the media report, they are paying their rent, have taken care of the property, asked for an extension etc, they are good tenants- also the agent had no problem with them.

P.S.
I would not have spoken to the owner either, as she shouted at me from across the street, with TV cameras rolling.

Looking at the situation from the owners point of view, its not as if they have another home to go to. I have some sympathy for the renters, but how disappointed the owners must feel when they came home after a long trip, to find they do not have a home. Going on TV was a bit extreme and maybe dangerous for their property, but......

The tenants could always dispose of all their 'papers' and then claim aslylum status, that accomodation looks pretty good to me.
