I am planning to mount a stoneguard/protector on the A frame of our caravan to protect the front of the van and also the rear of my vehicle for an outback trip. Any comments appreciated.
Several years ago I blew a rear window driving across the Plenty Highway (NT) despite having a stone guard fitted. It was on a previous camper trailer, not the Goldstream in my profile picture.
A better designed guard may have been more effective so I'm not "knocking" stone guards per se but I have thought that maybe large flaps attached to the rear of the tug such as "Rocktamers" (or a home brew version thereof) maybe a better option.
I saw the one pictured in Wombat's link somewhere on my recent trip to North Qld, no idea how it goes when manoeuvring onto a site and doing sharp turns.
PS: Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum Redsox. In SA that's a Norwood supporter. Sometimes these gadgets actually kick up more stones into the rear of the tug as Jimricho explains. The van should have a padded or chequer plate guard on the front which is designed to protect your van from rocks and other missiles. I've seen guards on camper trailers and off-road vans which look home made. A frame is welded or bolted onto the A frame, and then shade cloth is stitched or lashed onto the frame. I haven't seen a custom built guard. It's only really necessary if you intend to go on open surface, unsealed roads off the black top.

I have seen quite a good stone guard called stone stomper the link is http://www.stonestomper.com.au/ they are not cheap though.
We have a ladder on our a-frame which we have covered with shade cloth and angle towards the road when travelling. It has worked a treat so far!!

Hi Glenda.
Any chance of a picture of your ladder stoneguard.
Notice you have a Avan Cruiseliner ? in your Avatar.
We have a friendly upholsterer who I will get to make me a Trampoline stoneguard. Like the Stone stomper. Will you be at the "Avan AGM Rally" in Alice Springs next April.
Regards
