how to rid your campsite of flies

Hi i put this on another forum, it may make your travels more pleasant:)

This time of year all the rednecks invade our favorite bush camp sites. They don't bury cover their waste and the weekend after hundreds of baby blowflies will be buzzing about.

here's a good trick to get rid of them

1) put up a small tent -just the inner bit will do. If it has two openings zip one up.
2) Slowly cook a sausage and some onion (by now you should have lots of flies buzzing about
3) Place the food on a plate, some newspaper or a political advert. Then put it in tent.
4) Leave one side of the tent opened until it fills with flies. Then zip it up.
5) Then hit them high and hit thme low.

Repeats steps 4+5 until your campsite is free of these young blowies. Open tent and pour out the blowies, shovel them onto the fire so as not to feed the ants.

I did this at Meroo (killed over 500) and had no blowies for months, As you have broken the breeding cycle!.

(will work in your backyard as well, if having friends over for a BBQ, do the above a couple of hours before they arrive.

What a great story.
Very similiar to the bottle I got from Bunnings. You hang it at the back door with some smelly green stuff in it. Gosh knows where all the blowflies come from. I've never seen so many. It fills up quick, you empty it and start again.
Thought of taking it on the road with me but couldn't stand the stink en route. You really don't want to hang it too close to the back door either, those flies can be overpowering buzzing around trying to get into the jar.

Great idea! I don't have a small tent, but I suppose I could use the ensuite tent. I'd have to make sure all the killing was done before I need to use the ensuite. biggrin

Marj, what if you tie it up tight in a plastic bag? Would that contain the smell? confuse

I wouldn 't want to use the en suite tent Beth. A bit risky.
I think the stinky jar would have to be carried in maybe a screw top container. It is reeaally stink.

that bottle you buy from bunnings works great. even better if you buy them for the neibours an hang them in thier back yards as they seem to attract a lot of flies

Yes, I suppose so. I'll get one of the smelly things then.

The tent idea was for quick kill. The tent i am talking about is <$20 from k or w. I liked the idea of the toilet tent!! Remember you dont need much spray as you are spraying a small enclosed space, and the cintronella smell will air out. After all people spray in their homes.

Looking into getting a mossie attractor next to work like above. If I worked for switch'n'stitch i suppose we would use george for bait.

We have a zapper blue light thingy and believe me it attracts all sorts of insects and moths so whatever you do don't hang it near where you are sitting.

Hanging it in the neighbours yard is essential........
