Don't know if I will get any further north but hope to go to Bowen as well to catch up with a cousin I haven't seen in years. Hopefully will spend 3 months from leaving here to getting back home again.
Me too. Gives me a plan to aim for after Xmas, and before heading up north for the winter.
You aren't the only one HW - we too are leaving for place south and west of Sydney come April 2012. This Paradise sounds a goer - just hope it does. don't mind going back to the 60's either. cheers Terry

Well if you make it as far north as Bowen we can definitely catch up HW as I will be on the way. I'll most probaby be up this way from June to October.

Returning to the topic of the thread.
Dont think we would rush over there in Jan-Feb 2012, but maybe later in the year.
BOM weather stats have Melbourne max temps in the mid 20s, whilst Port Augusta (Aero) is in the mid 30s for Jan-Feb and a bit lower in March.
Im sure it is usually a lot hotter than mid 20s when the Tennis Grand Slam is on in Melbourne late January.
Don't assume that Melbourne temperatures in summer will be anything like the averages given by the BOM. An average of 26 means it might be 40 degrees or 18, virtually never a nice 26.

Agreed, and thats what I indicated by referencing the Tennis Grand Slam in Melbourne which sometimes is played in near 40C.
Now apply that same logic to the mid 30s temps BOM say not that far from Melrose SA during Jan-Feb and into March.
Not good camping weather, unless you strike the low side of the averages.
Depends on whether (or should that be weather, LOL) you feel lucky, or not.
