has anyone been to cowell on the west coast of SA looking for the gemstone called jade,, i know you can buy it from the shops there but i'd like to find my own,, i'm starting to collect gems from around the place,,, does anyone whose out doing the grey nomad thing go fossiking for gems,, i got a few when we were in tassie just last month,, nothing out standing but enought to create some interest, picked tem up down near South port tassie still working out what some of them are but now would like to add to my collection just one my hobby i guess to keep me occupied

Theres lots of them out there BB! Didnt go to Cowell, the weather turned horrible so we gave it a miss. Kimba had a shop selling "local" jade at high prices, if you can find your own it would be good.

hi yeh don't really want to buy hi priced stuff from the shops getting out and finding my own is part of the fun,,, like i said just one more hobby i guess,, so now i fly kites, sail land yachts,, build and fly and blow up model rockets,, given gokart racing away for the time being so need something to fill that void,,,,,,,,,,mmmmm just a big kid i guess

I don't think you can go fossicking for jade around Cowell. I believe the mine is private and I am not aware of any other miners rites for the gemstone. You may need to do some more homework on that one. They don't make as much fuss at Cowell about the jade as they do in Qld in the gemfields, or in the gold fields of WA where you can get a miner's permit and fossick and prospect to your heart's content.
