have been travelling and working around Oz for 10 years now, mostly in Caravan Parks, but am thinking of going to NZ for a month or so, and hiring a campervan. Anyone already done this, or know about freecamping in NZ? Thanks in advance for any useful tips

No!! Only kidding. My brother built his own motorhome over there and he and wife get away as much as they can. They always freecamp and I know there is an arrangement with locals who allow you to camp on their land. Not sure how they arrange it or if theres a book with them all in or if you need to go through some club. I can't check for you at the moment, Sister in laws mum in hosp, had a stroke, don't expect her to survive.
We are originally from nz. Heaps of free camping spots, especially around the east , west and south coasts. Pay to have a loo with u . You can wash in the sea, or inland rivers.
tourism nz or auckland office should have exact details of places. East coast of north island, is beautiful. Going into summer very hot. west coast of south island rugged
Last year my wife and I,spent two wonderful weeks in the South Island of NZ.We hired a motorhome and picked a winter month for our trip. What a beautiful surprise we had driving from one end of the Island to the other,do you know they speak a type of English.A spectacular countryvery welcoming, plenty of free camping. The motorhome was delivered to the airport at Christchuch and from there it all happy camping.A sad note is the fact that the one night we stayed in a motel, the motel was destroyed in the earthquake.Cheers,Father Ted
The reason I said loo, because in nz the public toilets can be absolutley disgusting, I know I lived their for over 40 years. So bear in mind. Always carry loo paper, santiser for hands, etc, I always put paper down before entering the throne room so to speak. Plenty of bushes anyway, but dont go wandering off too far, or otherwise you can get lost, especially in the thick fern bush. A nice place to go to is Moere Hot Springs, north island, inbetween gisborne and wairoa on the east coast. Beautiful bush walks that take you up a steep terrain to natural hot pools. There is a small admission fee. Beautiful picnic areas, quiet and peaceful. Blackberry season is feb/march in that area, if you journey to the old pioneer cemetry you will be amazed at the size of the blackberries, especially the king berry which is in the centre of the bunch. Makes beautiful pies, Wild food. Another delicacy of the region is whitebait. But they only run in the ber months, sept, oct nov dec.
http://www.nzmotorhome.co.nz/NZMotorhomeForum/ and http://motorcamps.com/ Freedom Camping has been a hot issue here in NZ for the past year or two, but there are still plenty of places you can spend a night. Lookover the links above, youll soon get the idea. Regards John in Mosgiel.
