I returned home yesterday and after some of the things I saw and did, I will never ever complain about anything we have here in Australia again.

We live in the BEST country in the world and anyone who whinges about what we have needs a reality check....and maybe a slap across the face to wake them up biggrin

It was certainly different to be in the minority as a white and I found the blacks over there far far better than most of the arrogant whites.  Just my opinion...sorry if I offend anyone.

It is hard to see blacks begging at every set of lights (or robots as they call them) and they sell everything they can get their hands on as no one gets the dole there...so they do what they can to live and survive....where I stayed even had a guard with a baton to keep people away from the bins on garbage night !!!!

I wonder what would happen here if the dole was removed....hmmmmm biggrin

I visited a shanty town which was a real eye opener and the people that lived there were friendly and open (or most were)

It was strange seeing baboons on the roadway as well as ostriches...and I will post some shots asap....some nicew ildlife shots

Some boofheads tried to rip us off when I was trying to get cash from an ATM..but they picked the wrong bloke...hahaha.

I was glad I went and I may even return......OH...and the best thing was the price of beer.  130Rand for a box of stubbies which equates to around $15 AUS...woo hoo !!!

When we came back from a 15 month stint working in both Scotland and Canada in the mid-60's, I was saying basically the same thing Dunco.

"More people should go overseas, and see how other people have to live, and they would appreciate Australia more."

Not too many countries have a Basic wage, or anything like the Dole, and in those days in America, if you had no money, you did not get Medical treatment etc.   There are still jobs in America today, where the only money you get is what you earn in Tips.

Back then we still were one of the few who only worked a 40 hour week.  Even in Canada I was working 48 hours a week.

And kids on the Dole here, have the hide to complain if they can't get the latest I-pod or I-pad every time there is an up-grade.

Wish they could see the reality of what you have just experienced Dunco.

I can remember when it was 2 rand to the Aus$. I used to manage a welding works in Durban.The politics forced me out. The BOERS used to think they were chosen by god- look at them now.But then again , all countrys run by Africans are,how canI say this, Rooted!Look at Zimbabua(Rhodesia).(spelling is not good).But they did it themselves, I suppose.You don,t know how lucky you are til you travel.

i too agree with Dunco, i've been to a few different countries, fiji, Uk , Turkey, Hongkong etc
And sometimes these kind of trips make you think what we take forgranted every day..

I lived in Rhodesia for many years and considered it to be God's Country but since being in good old OZ I have changed my mind.  We live in the best country in the world.

Although I have lived in Asia for a couple of years and visited some other countries, I have no desire to travel overseas anymore (particularly with all the crap that goes on with planes etc) and have decided just to confine my travels to Oz and NZ. Even just confining it to them you would never get to see it all in our lifetime.......just love our country and don't want to go elsewhere. Nowhere is perfect by I believe we are top of the heap....just my thoughts....

As I said before, I don't even have a passport, no need for one........that's not to say that there aren't some truely beautiful other places in the world, they are just not here.

 To each his/her own, but I think that's a pity. I believe that people should have the experience of being a foreigner and the one that talks with an accent (or a foreign language) and is different.

It's a cliché I know but travel does broaden the mind. It can make us less xenophobic and more accepting of those who are are different.

With 0.3 of one percent of the world's population travel can help us appreciate that we are small players on the world stage.

 Absolutely, Jimricho!

My overseas travel only amounts to PNG, and USA, all quite some time ago, but its given me a much greater apreciation of our country, and a greater sympathy for those who struggle with much less in other countries.

Gotta agree as well Jimricho.   If you never experience anything different, you'll never truly know just how great this country is. 

You might imagine you do, but that's nothing at all like having the proof through experience.
