Hume Highway ???

I was wondering when the duplication of the Hume Highway began, and guessed about 40 years ago.
A Google search revealed that the duplication began in Victoria in February 1960. That's almost 52 years ago.
That's B.S. in a wealthy country that it takes 52 years to link our two largest cities with 800Km of dual carriageway.
The last sections are due to be completed before Christmas.
Can you believe it? I can't.
Well maybe I can, as Pollies fly, not drive Interstate.
On top of this long awaited duplication they call it a Motorway (M31).
There a only a few true Freeway sections with the rest having intersecting roads in lieu of interchanges.
Many similar duplication highways are designated 'A' class roads.
What differentiates a 'M' & 'A' class roads and 'M' as distinct from Freeway?
Confused,
Ozjohn confuse

Gday...

When I was an ETP, my job required me to travel to USA a fair bit. I made a few mates - particularly in the USA Govt.

Some of them were required to come to Sydney in 2007 (for the first time) for a conference, with a second conference being held in Melbourne the following week.

They decided to hire a car in Sydney and drive to Melbourne rather than fly "coz we just gotta so this Ossie country".

They were astounded in what we all saw as our "best major highway". They felt they had taken the wrong highway for most of the journey.

I must admit that compared to US Highways/Freeways it is a bit 'small' - we don't have those four lanes each way as they do - out in the country.

Having said all of that ..... goddam it - I certainly prefer being in Ossie than in the stars and stripes.

(PS - ETP = Employed Tax Payer)

Cheers

John
