We are considering downsizing our house with its large garden to a townhouse with only a courtyard garden. The problem is there'll be no place to store the caravan while we are at home, at present its in a purpose-built carport.
Research near Canberra has found a couple of places that store caravans, at a cost of over $110 a month. (Might as well pay caravan park fees!)
Does anybody else pay for storage, what does it cost and how did you find it?
I live on a busy street and often hold up traffic in both directions whilst backing into the driveway. It used to stress me out something terrible until I realised the people could see I was backing in and would soon be out of the way.
During the early days I did a ring around the storage places and found they varied greatly in their pricing. In the end I've still got the caravan in my driveway. And I suspect this busy street is playing in the back of my mind and is probably why I dont do more weekend trips in it. I did find that some of the caravan yards had contacts where they could be stored, and also one repairer had a facility for storing vans.
My brother is a single guy who lives in a small older house with no off road parking. He's actually removed part of the verandah of his house so he could get the car off the road, but the caravan was left out the front on the road until recently. He's come across an elderly neighbour who has a backyard which is accessable and who has agreed to allow the van to be left there. He gives the old fellow a few dollars for this. I dont know if there would be any insurance issues. I raised this with him once but he says he didnt care, he'd just say it was removed from the front of his house.
Hope anything in this long winded post helps.
Cheers Ross
ps, I worked in a bank many years ago and did a stint at Canberra, in the early 1970's it was. I lived at Cook at the time, and the next suburb, Weetangera was the last suburb before the bush. Went back recently and that Belconnen area has certainly extended, nearly out to Yass now.
Hi, we pay 160 plus power a week even when we are not here, so 25 a week for secure storage and only when your not using it aint bad. We qualified after 60 days for that long term rate and before that it was 210 per week. Drop in and see us one day in Portland. A lot cheaper than a house.

Gerty check what their annual rate is as you will find tht it is most likely much cheaper. A caravan sales place a few miles from me stores vans and charges $1000 per year (around $20/week) but it is much cheaper than paying by the week which is around $50/wk. Granted you have to pay for the whole year whether the van is there or not so; it would depend how long you stored it for compared to how long you were away.
Cheers
