yes Cannylass We have found the same problem. Maybe a info sheet with the etiquette of camping should be standard issue with a rental camper

Oh I wish.......and info on how harsh our climate can be, the importance of carrying sufficient water supplies along with some info on our cultural etiquette would not go astray either.

While we are on the subject, how about some instruction on 4WD safety too.

I've commented several times about the filthy state of some rest spots/free camps. I didnt like to blame any one section of the travelling community, and have always been a bit concerned that mature travellers like most of us might be blamed for it.

Perhaps anybody seeing such behaviour might report it to the rental company if there was one... having said that I dont know what they could do about it either.

Does anybody know if its an actual crime that you can report to the police?

sorry for the pun but I think it would be too much paperwork for the police to deal with.

I think it should be LAW that any person that travels in any type of vehicle, that a 'portapote of some discription, must be part of the essential camping equipment, and if one is found to be camping in an area that does not have some sort of toilet facility, and they do not have a portable toilet on board, then they should recieve a hefty fine, Also the companies that supply these 'wizzbangs' should BY LAW, Include a portable toilet as a mandority item of camping equipment,

My concern would then be their disposing of the contents....that is how and where they disposed of the contents.

In Brisbane you can be fined for not carrying a doggy-doo bag when walking a dog. Perhaps the same fine could apply to campers.

Carrying the appropriate items is one thing, it's getting people to use it appropriately that is the problem.

I doubt that contacting the hire companies will do much good - just check out this page on the Wicked Campers site for an example of their attitude to responsibility - http://www.wickedcampers.com.au/cheap-campervans/specials-deals/686-smoke-pot-special.html

However, perhaps contacting the local council and instead of trying to dob in backpackers who will no doubt be gone the next day anyway, what about dobbing in the hire company? Enough complaints, and enough pressure from councils, and the hire companies might start taking some responsibility for educating their customers.

One of the worst I met was a BIG Yankee MH who proudly proclaimed he had NEVER used a dump point. he always just dumped before he left the camp site and remarked (It don't stink for long). Advised that if he considered that OK why did he not dump when he got to a site RIGHT under his door step.

I was goiving him a guided tour of where I was doing voluntary work and when we had this little discussion I advise that the tour was over and he was to leave the site and bid him fair well and advised I hoped I NEVER met him on the road.

Many Tourist are OK when you have a gentle discussion on the care and maintenance of our country. I usually start by doing an emu parade right [past their van and then bid them good day and start a chat. Works most times and many join in for the walk. We forget they don't have open spaces like we do and they are used to being cleaned up afterwards. Just think of our own kids and grandkids, many are too lazy to leave their rooms and lucky to dress themselves etc.

Regards
Brian

The good the bad and the ugly. Some people are just pigs, as I said once before, nz has terrible terrible public toilets, I certainly dont miss that.
I guess as Pauline said, some of us know how to conduct ourselves in a ladylike and genteel manner, and then there are others who let it all hang out so to speak.

Even if no notice was taken of an information sheet, I feel one should be given by these hire companies and let them know we will be on the look out for any one who leaves the camping area in such a state we then can take there car or what ever they are travelling in a rego number and report them to the hire company who should maybe take an extra deposit from the camper just a thought

as has already been said, I do not think the hire company will do much about it, they have their money and that's all thy want.
