Hi John, Funny thing I have just changed a few plans so I can check out Carnarvon Gorge in mid April. What are the roads like there, I only have a ford Sedan not a 4x4. I am staying somewhere in that area with my camper for 2 nights so I can spend a full day there.

 Gday...

The road from the highway to Carnarvon Gorge is sealed for about 20km and then there is 21km of unsealed, gravel road.

There is a creek crossing on the unsealed section - slow entry and exit should be OK in a 2WD. The Takarakka Resort Van Park entry road is OK but a bit tight, twisty and crosses the Carnarvon Creek (concrete ford).

The roads were OK when I went there about a month ago. However, if there has been any rain in the area the unsealed road, particularly the access road to Takarakka Resert, would be difficult for even 4X4. Obviously a phone call would be advisable before entering.

I left my 'black-top tourer' big caravan in Rolleston and drove in in my 4X4 for the day. Even though the road was quite dry and accessible, I would have been travelling very slowly toward the last bit of the unsealed road with my van.

I have friends who were in Carnarvon a week before me, driving a Falcon wagon towing a 17ft single axle van and they had no trouble and they just think I am overly cautious. (Old age does that to ya biggrin no )

Cheers

John

Thanks for the info John, not sure about a river crossing in a Ford Falcon though, maybe I might have to hold off on that and wait till I get 4x4. DOUG
