I haven't read the attachment yet but having travelled the Great Ocean Road many times, they would want to upgrade the road, cut out a few of the really bad bends first before I would be paying any money to travel it again.
You got to be joking, been down that road a few times. The towns down that way will not be happy, people will not travell the great road.First you cant go to national parks with out paying, then free camps dont come free, what will be next!!!!!.The goverments wants us to work until we fall of the perch, why cant we enjoy are retired life,we are the ones that made this country what it is today, all we do is pay pay pay.Any how after all that i am still going to travell are great country and love it.rvtraveller2
Doubt it will happen. Do I care if it does NO. Cross it off your list and go elsewhere where they welcome your money. Only go there in winter. To many people in summer.

While we may well boycott it if there is a toll, the place is absolutely full of overseas tourists, and they will keep all the tourist operators going happily. Nobody would even miss us from that area!
Suspect this is a bit of a beat-up, just because one mayor proposes something doesn't mean that there is any actual prospect of it happening. I figure this mayor is just trying to get a bit of attention to his complaint that the government isn't tipping enough money into road maintenance.
I live near the G.O.R. and have probaly travelled it more than 100 times in the last 20 years, with all the wifes visitors from overseas [ Germany ] If ?? they bring in a Toll Goodbye G.O.C. there is plenty of other places I can take them, IMHO, i personally think it is over rated and to bl--dy expensive anyway, It's good but i reckon i have seen much better coastline in my travels,
What happened to the day's when all the residents and businesses paid there Rates and Taxes to the councils, and those monies would be used to maintain roads and services and improvments, to attract visitors and Tourists to the area, so they would spend money in the town,
Nowadays you seem to pay a lot more rates and taxes, and for that they will empty your rubbish bin once a week.
If they DARE to bring in a toll,, Then R.I.P. -- G.O.C. dazren

It's a long time since Councils spent much time engaged in attending to their core responsibilities of Rates Roads and Rubbish. Unfortunately State Governments have past off many of what was their socially funded responsibilities to Local Government who, in turn welcomed the transfer of responsibilities and apparent power base but never asked for the full funding that should have come with it . Have a look at what your local council has become involved in which until a few years back many were wholly State/ Federally funded , social welfare housing, Arts/ Cultural Centers, Age care resources, Bike lanes,Child Care centers, Wages for Councilors and Mayors, unrestricted use by employees of council vehicles , overseas aid programs, external sponsorships, The wastage of available funds coming from a a very small revenue base is horrific and out of control throughout all LGA's across Australia.
Makes one laugh when Local Councils want to be recognized in the Australian constitution What needs to happen is for local councils to put the local back into local government and represent what the rate payers want for their dollar only then will they get the respect back.

Surely the rate payers in that neck of the woods pay enough rates already, especially the tourism operators. Next they'll want to charge admission to park and check the coastal scenery. Maybe the council needs to look at it's budget and what it pays the councillors and the Mayor.

Wonder if said Council have undertaken a cost analysis of both sides of the question before opening the mouth, bet you the loss of income from Aussie Travellers who will simply bypass the area will outweigh any proposed income revenue (tax)..........although a possible solution is to place a tax on the tourist sightseers in coaches, not sure this would be legal under the Australian Constitution &/or Discrimination Laws.
It costs far too much to holiday in Australia compared to other countries, so why aren't the powers that be trying to lower costs instead of ripping us all off.?

The most effective way to do this would be for "the powers that be" (whoever they are in a free market economy) to screw up the economy (and jobs and prosperity) by stopping our resources exports thus reducing the value of the Aussie dollar. (sarcasm intended)
It's the value of the dollar combined with our high standard of living (much higher than some of the overseas holiday destinations) that's leading to this inbalance.
Alternately maybe nanny government could introduce price contols on just about everything to reduce costs......oops forgot....that's been tried elsewhere, it failed, it was called communism!
