I've been absent for a week or so and thought I'd provide some details. I've been lucky enough to be camping at the home of my friends John & Anne at Nth richmond .. Having purchased my new bike and trailer, I took a 160 k ride to add a few k's so that might get the bike its 1000 k service before I left the area.
About 3 or 4 k's from getting back here, I was travelling slowly (approx. 40 kph) when I felt the front wheel losing its grip as I rounded a slight downhill bend .. I was able to straighten the bike up and steered for the roadside.. the rear brakes just skidded on the wet gravel and I didn't wish to hit the front brakes too hard ..
I aimed the bike for a gap between a few trees then got airborne and separated from the bike and thats how we landed ..
The bike is virtually unnmarked .. no physical damage at all .. Signalled to a passing vehicle who stopped and helped to pick me up off the deck. He in turn stopped another vehicle who helped to pick up the bike with him ..
The bike virtually started straight away, and after a short while I got back on and rode the bike back to the John & Anne's place with Bruce (the 1st one that stopped) following me there to make sure I got there ok ..
My thanks to Bruce and the other guys for their support !
That night I ended up in a hospital with bruised ribs and very sore left lung .. and the right hip needing consolation for (4) broken bones on L1, L2, L3 & L4 .. just off the spine ..
I was lucky .. back out of hospital today and living life !! (just a little slower, thats all !!

Wow Jonathan, that is some mishap. leave you alone for 5 minutes and you do yourself a mischief. Seriously, so sorry to hear about your spill. I would think there will be a while for recuperation with all those broken bones. How are you still walking? Take it easy, rest up and look after yourself.
Geez Jonathan.....what a close one! You didnt get out unscathed that's for sure and I would imagine you are feeling a bit sore and sorry with the fractures and bruising.
How nice to read of the assistance given to you and the concern for your welfare.
Thanks one and all for your responses ..I'm sure I'll be fine and personally intend improving on a daily basis.
Still love the bikes though and won't change the status but now have had a "reminder" ..
Incidentally Vic, I have found out the reason why it did happen and its something that I had not experieced before. Firstly, I've done away with the old scooter cause I always consdered it fun but thought it was dangerous ! .. hehehe .. yeah right ! .. New wheels is a Honda CB400 road bike and much more suited to my purpose.
Now.. it had only done just under 800 k's and the tyres had not bedded in properly yet as most of the k's had been done quite slowly under damp conditions. This combined with a very greasy bitumen road surface and the lack of my awareness was the result ..
I hope to move out of here in a few weeks, but til I do, I'm happy to be in the company of "Jandas Fun"
Thank goodness you are O.K. know how you feel about bike riding though are a couple of old bikies always wanted to get a Harley but we never did. Just take care and get better soon Helena
That was a close call and so glad to hear you are ok. Just rest up and make sure those bones heal properly.
I rode a bike for years and had one of those unavoidable accidents where a car crossed straight in front of me without looking. I slammed into the car flew over it, landed on my head splitting the helmet, then my posterior. The only broken bone was my thumb (go figure) but geeze my backside was so sore I could hardly walk for weeks.
I'm glad to hear you're on the mend and know how it happened. Never too old to learn, eh? I have enjoyed the occasional pillion ride, reassuring myself that the rider wouldn't do anything to take any risks which might damage the bike or the body. So far that theory has paid off. Just take it easy and don't rush. Things take a little longer to heal these days. Stay safe.
