Going on a long car journey? Ensure you take a pee

"That is the warning from a group of Melbourne researchers who have discovered that a full bladder can be as distracting to a driver as major sleep deprivation or drinking alcohol

According to Caulfield Hospitals aged psychiatry research coordinator Dr Matthew Lewis, a full bladder has a negative effect on attention and memory.

In other words, riding in a car with a teetotal driver who has forgotten to urinate can be just as dangerous as travelling with a tipsy driver, or someone who has been awake for 24 hours.

The study, published in the Neurology and Urodynamics journal, also reveals that a full bladder can reduce the speed at which drivers make decisions.

The research won an Ig Nobel prize, which recognises the weirdest scientific breakthroughs that first make people laugh, and then make them think.  "  Yahoo!7

Interesting.  I found that out on the Pacific Hywy.  Stopping places are few and far between.  Would like better signs too.

Wow! Amazing trivia. But they are right, its very distracting. Somebody should tell the SA RTA and maybe they'd put toilets in their rest stops.

Know the feeling, when you have to go you have to go. You can't stop thinking about it either until you've been. Very distracting. Just as well I carry a portaloo now, I know I can always pop in the back if I can't find a public toilet.

I have done this more than once with the loo in the van...comes in very handy.

Another advantage.......I was realy tired coming home after a weekend away one time so pulled over and had a catnap in the van as well

Disgusting thing it is too.  If women were made to pee standing up, their plumbing would have been designed differently.

This is it..the Shewee! A friend gave me one a long time ago as a joke. I tried to use it once, in desperation, but 'made of mess of it'.wink

I can't crouch any more Baroma,,,crook knees,, so standing up was a good idea, in theory. no Thank goodness I now have the porta loo.

I think it's funny that it took a group of researchers to discover this! I could've told them!

I was on an online shopping site the other day and now I can't remember which one.
They had both a mans and a lady's bottle. The mans looked just like the ones they have in the hospital, can't remember what the lady's one looked like and if I could remember the site would go back for another look.
For the life of me Beth, I can't work out how that would work. You might as well just squat on the ground. Its open both ends isn't it?

Wouldn't it be great to just pop behind a tree like the blokes do. I am going to buy one and have a few practice uses!! I think there is one that's foldable, bendable can carry in your pocket. Not sure how you would clean it once used though and return to pocket???

It's ok for the boys to get out and stand to pee on the left wheel, but that doesn't work for wee girls. (sorry-pun)
It really hampers the vision when the eyeballs are floating.
There are some eco-toilets on parking bays in SA and NSW. Vic has great truck service centres close to the metro area but the country can go to hell, again, as usual.
We camped with a wide load at the Cobar weigh pad which has shelters and toilet.
Every state has a different approach to parking bays and the facilities they'll provide. I think the same approach applies to free camping areas.
Some councils in SA have even closed parking bays because people were using them and filling the rubbish bins. Unheard of! How dare they!
I don't think I'll try the bottle.

I can't squat Marj...the knees just won't allow it.

And this how it's done, supposedly. confuse

If I remember rightly, I had some antibacterial wipes to clean it afterwards.

OK you guys this is getting out of control. My point was particularly on a new highway eg the pacific around Taree etc, I needed to go and found it difficult to find a spot to pull over safely. Didn't even need a toilet have one on board. Missed a couple because I had a ruddy great truck pushing me along. Most uncomfortable for quite a way.

Checked out on Ebay, they come in a little container, could use a wipe on it and put back into the container. At the end of the day wash it out with disinfectant. Worth a try instead of being uncomfortable and not a toilet in site. Often you come across toilets that are not fit for use. Will let u know how it goes with mine when I get it Boroma.

When I was a little boy, my mother always said before we went out " have you been to the toilet"

Well guess what, I am 67 now and my wife has turned into my mother
