I would expect your set up up to be a bit hungry Margaret, I only have a Avan camper and Ford Falcon and when using both I notice a bit of extra fuel being used. From what I have read though if you sit around 90kmh on open roads, keep the tyre pressure up a tad higher than usual, be steady on the peddle that all helps. I assume the Nissan is Diesel? If so that should be better than petrol. Sorry if I'm not much help. Oh! I notice your new to here so WELCOME from me. Put your question on the general forum as well, you will be surprised the response you get. Check out the thread on "Fuel Consumption" by Happywanderer. Enjoy your time here and on the road.

There are a few Nissan models that wear an equipment level ST on them. Which one do you have exactly?

Doug has covered most things. I have a Navara D40 diesel auto ST (pensioners pack.) I tow at 90 km/h max. Generally I lock out (press) the overdrive switch and tow in 4th gear. I generally burn 14.5 - 16 l/100km towing and 10 - 11 l/100km solo. Any vehicle whether diesel or petrol will have that sort of increase (percentage) in fuel consumption when towing something 2 tonnes or more. It's just a fact of life for caravanners.

i took a nissan 3ltr ST to Rocky with a 20footer and found the fuel on some sections was up around 26/100
i found the best return was 100 kph in overdrive then change back as the revs drop (dont let it labour) then started getting returns of 17 -18/100
as every car is different trial and error

Want to look after the Auto? Don't use Overdrive.
Want to save fuel? Slow down. (Especially if you have a head wind).

If I may jump in here and ask a question about overdrive please? I have an auto and Someone said to me last week, if i wanted to save my gearbox to drive only up to 3rd gear and NEVER past that, is that correct? I have 6 speed auto with the ability to drop back the gears (not sure what you call that gearbox). It was also mentioned that a second cooler on the gearbox helps. It's all new to me....
I'm open to suggestions and assistance please. I'm assuming if you drive in 3rd gear only then you re revving harder so using more fuel??

Gday Evie n Rhys

confusethere is another current post where this matter is discussed extensively, but in simple terms check your car manual or talk to a dealer and find out which gear has one to one ratio and that is the best one for normal running when towing it puts less strain on your transmission and is quite economical, a larger or extra cooler for transmission is well worth the cost if towing.smile
