Being a solo lady coaster driver I am looking for some advice on new tyres,I have split rims 700R16 on it at the moment, they were on it when I bought it so I do not know how good or bad they are, any advice would be appreciated, thank you, Norma and shady.
if it is for the van shown i would leave it as is because you will need the ply rating a radial may not give you that plus the cost of the replacement rims
In the process of lookinf for tyres at the moment for the tow vehicle.
The difference in prices is astounding, some businesses just want to make a fortune.
I,e, Bob Janes want $390 for the same tyre that OzzieTyres will sell me for $314. That's a difference of $$76 on ONE tyre. Not bad if you can get away with it?
Make sure you shop around, use the internet and try the independant Tyre places.
The big name places, e.g. Bib Jane, Goodyear, Beaurepaires will all be over the top.
Hi Norma I ended up switching over to normal rims because I was sick of the cost of tubes plus tyres and also continually blowing tubes as a result of dust getting in. I needed to get a full set of new tyres so it was opportunte to replace the rims ( had recently bought 2 new front tyres and needed 2 new back ones and it was a 5 minute job for the tyre place to put the front ones on the new rims) . I got the rims from a wrecker for $100 for a set of 5. Mine is a 4wd hilux and my tyre bloke said there would be no problem getting the correct ply in radials. I would guess that you might go on quite a bit of dirt roads so it might be worth you investigating the savings on switching over to radials. As Ken said talk to a tyre place. New rims cost anyhting up to $200 each so you will need to source from a wrecker - usually the tyre place can help with this.
As Ken said, ask a tyre joint for their advice and then follow Dusty's advice and do some independent research.
However, if it was me then i would be looking to replace those split rims and the tubed tyres that they require with a set of steel wheels and tubeless tyres. Tubed tyres are much more prone to catastrophic failures when punctured and will run hotter. Tubeless tyres are typically much safer and are easier to balance as well.
Wheels will cost you about $100 each wheel.
The easy puncture repairs that tubed tyres enable may be important to you and if that is the case then you may choose to stick with them, but I wouldn't.
Make sure that you know the load rating that you require so you can filter out those tyres that are not up to the job.
back in the good old days when all tyres had tubes flat tyres were most commom now that steel belted tubeless radials are the norm flats are a rare thing

Los of different opinions there Norma, I didn't realise you had dual wheels but coasters are common enough to source rims at wreckers and you should be able to pick them up for around $20 each second hand. My personal non-expert opinion is that tubeless tyres in the long run are better than split rims and tubes for a solo woman traveller because they are less prone to punctures, easy to do a quick fix with the emergency repair stuff, and cheaper for replacement tyres. Last year I had 4 punctures and just got sick of it.
Thank you all for your advice and comments, there is a lot to think about as I need 4new one s I already have 2 new ones which I hope can go on the inside rear, but I think I will have to go to a tyre joint, shepparton is the closest any ideas who to go to thanks again for the help, Norma and shady
Tyrepower has always done the right thing or the right price for me. You may need to go to a truck tyre place for the yellow bus. It does pay to shop around and ask questions. Thank you all again, Ken I rang jax, price was very good but they cannot fit tyres to split rims they do not have a safety cage to do it in safely next best price was $223 for maxxis, inc. tube fitting and balancing, how does that sound? Norma and shady

Hi Val. I should have called in there . I thought about it as I went past but decided to keep on going to Greens Lake. How long are you staying at Aysons Reserve.
Val, only about half dozen families at Greens lake and very quiet. I might pop out for a few days if daughter doesn't need me for babysitting. Not sure when though.

I've had Maxxis tyres on my Landcruiser before and got a very good run out of them and with no issues and was very happy with them.
I support the ditching of the split rims theory....tubless tyres are IMO much better. Might cost a bit more now but down the track you will be better off.
