Just about to do a full service on the front end of the old tug, steering swivell knuckle bearings & seals etc. This is just preventative maintance as there is nothing visualy wrong, just time to have a look & its easier to do at home than down the road some where.

During the years in the trade we always used after market, (non genuine) service kits with no problems.  Out of curiosity I checked out the price of genuine parts from toyota. Are we sitting down ?

First off their service kit only contains half of the parts required to do the job, the other half come as seperate items, how stupid.

Toyota cost for all parts required to do the complete job , $650.00 , yes you are reading it correct.

Non genuine , including quility name bearings,   $99.00

I rest my case.disbeliefno

no   now you tell me.   We have recently bought a 1998 Toyota HiAce and at the time of purchasing it were advised that parts could be easily obtained in most areas (the cost of them was not mentioned).   Nevertheless, we have travelled over 8,000kms since June and have had no problems.   We did have a thorough service before we left.

Jimbo , dont feel for me, I have the after market ones in my hand.

As I stated, it was just a check to see what the difference was & Ive been around long enough not to get caught like that.

The advice here is correct , but always check your prices on every thing.

On some parts they are competitive.

It can go both ways, there was a issue a while back with after market commodore water pumps, the impella was falling of the shaft, but as general rule most parts are ok.

GST has little to do with this price rip off... The GST on a $99 purchase is $9, on the $650 it's $59.09. In many cases (probably including this one) GST replaced an even higher rate of wholesale sales tax. After nearly 12 years it's time to get used to it 'cos it aint gunna go away.

Some people seem to have forgoten what sales tax on parts used to be, around 27% to 33% when i was in busines. 10% GST is a hell of a lot less, just spread over a larger range.

I agree DeBe, i used to repair TV's and install TV antennas pre and post GST, all the prices of parts (31% from memory) dropped considerably (down to 10%) even thought the GST was added to labour costs. But people actually got an antenna system installed cheaper after GST.

But on the price of Toyota Geniune parts, I once had a couple of belts replaced on my 4runner while it was in getting some work done by Toyota (recall for headgasket replacement and possible head or engine replacement if they were badly corroded, when it was 10yrs old and had about 100, 000K on the clock) They charged me $80.00 for the two belts. And later when I called them and priced a pair of contacts for the starter motor, they quoted $25.00 each. I went to the local auto sparky and asked him what he charged, he crawled under the car to check which type (there are 2 types for that era) and then said $8.00 and he had plenty in stock. I agreed to purchase a set from him and handed him the $16.00. He handed me back $8.00 and said "no, $8.00 a pair"

Bill ; do be carefull with filters mate, some cheapies do not have the non return valves fitted, also the amount of filter paper is often much less.

We used to cut the old ones open in the shop to check out the amount of paper used. as for the return valve you can see this in the base of the fillter. As for the cheapies with out them the oil drains back over night, on start up each time it is like when you change a filter & the new one has to fill.
