I was up there in September 2010 and at that time they were talking about putting tar all the way to the cape. I battled through 90km of corrugations that made the Gibb River Road look tame.
Nice thing about travelling in that area is that you get plenty of 3G mobile reception. Every aboriginal community has their own tower. Well worth the trouble of getting there. Magic place.

They have been talking about putting tar down for the past 20 years (along the GGR} if they do then IMHO it will no longer be worth going along the Gibb, they will have high rise units for the car traveller and all that goes with it, would really spoil the bush.

Tar would be a big improvement to the Cape Leveque road Wombat, which is the one I was referring to. Some of the aboriginal groups are a bit concerned about it though, because they reckon it will bring too many visitors.

Without the tar the road will soon become impassable as the sand corrugations become large enough to swallow a tank.

Whalesong was one THE best spots we found to stay at in all of Australia, Lenny & Jacinta have an amazing place there. Lots of little surprises. The shower is 'special' (friends of mine built it), the 'vibe' is second to none, & the Jacinta's vegie garden was just gorgeous.
