Caravan thefts

We have one of those locks that fit up into the tow ball, it can't be cut off and it is almost impossible to get out without a key.

I was wondering which is most vunerable to theft, caravan, motorhome, 5th  wheelers or slide on. Caravans can be hitched to any tow ball, cars and trucks are stolen daily, slideons would need a right size flatbed plus anchor points and 5th wheelers a special hitch

Any thoughts on how to protect our 2nd biggest investment

Get a really old campervan that doesn't look worth stealing. No one will want it lol

Chain your dog to it Pete, he looks a good deterrant! (Bet hes a softie at heart though)

Seriously, theres lotsa locking devices, wheel clamps, etc, which can all be cut through with the right equipment. All you can do is deter the lazier thieves and slow down the more determined ones.

The battery powered tools have made life easy for the thieves they can cut through any clamping device in seconds, bit noisy though

Hi Gerty
She is a very friendly loving dog but if anybody threatens me she turns into a snarling beast, my kids (adults) sometimes pretend to attack me she jumps at them to push them away and stands between us

I like that yes all those that were stolen were the newer models and had locks on, I wonder how they get ride of them and if you buy one how on earth would you know it was stolen

true, true. that's one reason we bought an older van. the new vans are so expensive that the insurance premium is out of our league to start with. older vans are more homey to me anyway. cheers. rocket n strop

This was on the other night. They just backed up and busted the lock and went.

We have the usual deterrents of a ball lock and a wheel brace.

We have also taken a series of photos of identifying things around the van. We keep one set in the glove box and one at home. Hopefully we will never need them.

My caravan is parked with the drawbar facing the house and the stabilisers down.

There was a story on the news the other day and showed a couple back up to a rather large caravan, hooked it up and drove off into the sunset, maybe that should be sunrise as it was dark. They seemed to be very polished as well.

All caravans have serial No's which are required for registration. All vans sold should be put on the REVS list the same as cars are.
Wheel clamps will slow them down and maybe deter them altogether

Apparently some of the more "professional" thieves of boats and caravans use a tilt tray truck, throw a chain around the towbar and just haul it onboard.

If they want something bad enough they will surely find a way.
