The cats miaow.

I've been hearing this miaow around my place for awhile...all hours of the day and night...haven't seen a cat..niether landlord or I own a cat.

So I thought maybe it's a possum..do possums make that sound?..I know there are possums around here.

This morning I finally found the source! A big ginger cat strolling around outside miaowing loudly! evileye I'm not going crazy after all! That's relief! biggrin wink

Easily fixed, a call to the animal control at Logan council, loan of a cat trap and off it goes to the pound, all fixed

It crawled under the fence to next door, so probably belongs to them. I don't know them.

As far as I am concerned, any cat that roams at night is a feral cat and belongs at the pound

Isn't it sad in this day and age that we don't know our neighbours.  Once upon a time everybody knew everybody else in the whole street, not just next door. Think it was much better back then and we all hopped in and helped each other and celebrated together and were there for each other. Think we lost a very important part of our lives when we all became to busy or too suspicious to trust our neighbours or too transient perhaps.

I'm lucky enough to live in a neighbourhood where it's still like that. We mostly know each other and even those several houses away that I don't know still wave hello when driving past.

When I'm away (sometimes for a few months at a time) my next door neighbour comes into my house regularly and checks all is ok, including fridges working, no sign of entry, etc.

You and I are indeed fortunate in that respect Jim.  Would be nice to think that this was the norm rather than the exception.

If that cat has been howling as you describe, it sounds like a feral tom. Get rid of it!
If it belonged to anyone it would be well fed, maybe even chipped, and wouldn't be howling around the neighbourhood. It might even be larger than the average domestic cat.
Get rid of it! Don't worry who it might belong to. Tough t!ts! If it's mooching around it has to go. It's not being controlled as cats must be, so it's feral and has to go.
I love cats. Desexed, loved and well-fed cats. This one doesn't sound like it has any of those qualities. Get rid of it!

Yes, that was my thought CG, that it's a feral. We do have a very bushy reserve behind us. As far as my limited experience of cats, they miaow when they're hungry.

I'm not a cat lover, but I'd never intentionally harm any animal. But I have the very strong view that cats should be kept indoors or in an enclosure. Not allowed to roam free, particularly at night. I might ask my landlord if he can get one of those traps from the council.
