Whenever I would catch a flathead I would always and I mean ALWAYS get one of those horrible spikes in my finger, hand foot, somewhere and they hurt like hell for hours.
Doesn't happen any more though, cost me $120 on a charter boat to learn the trick but the little chits don't get me now.
A good size flattie sure makes a nice meal, shame you can't partake Ma.
Cheers Neil

What was intended to be a relaxing few hours on the water ended up a chore of delight. Landed 35 (different) flathead. The one I kept for dinner is chillin in the fridge, the rest happilly swimming again.

Where are you ? can I come down with my trawler,(foriegn owned) and catch ALL of them. You must be in the south as they worship flathead down there. Contrary to opinion, there are lots of flathead in the tropics, and people just don,t fish for them as we have coral trout and barras to pass the time.Don,t worry, I haven,t even bought my tinnie this trip. But I,m on my way south, so beware............
Well done Blue, you'll have to put a warning sign on the side of your canoe, "Look Out - Blue's Here".
Years ago when tenting on the banks of the Ashburton River at Old Onslow, I through a hand line into the water behind the fresh/sea water wall and went to bed.
Woke up in the morning and proceeded to pull my line in to pack away and felt something on it......yep.....a Flathead and what a whopper, so had fish for breakfast.
JRH......lucky that only bit your thigh, there are other ways for size enlargement you know

The sizes of flathead seem to very greatly around this coast. I've seen flathead almost a metre long caught west of Ceduna in the Southern Ocean. It made great cutlets on the bbq for a bus load of school kids on camp. I've seen smaller ones caught in other places, and used for bait. They're a very tasty fish. Good for you Blue.
