It would probably depend on a few factors... petrol or diesel engine, type of aux battery (deep cycle or dual purpose), AGM or wet battery, state of charge of the main battery (dead flat or just a bit "sick")

The short answer is that (assuming it's a deep cycle wet battery) I wouldn't depend on it as the only "fall back" position but if you were really stuck you'd certainly try it.

I carry a "1900(?) amp" jump starter to give me some extra battery capacity to supplement my house or aux battery if needed and I have successfully jump started my diesel Pajero with it.

My Dodge has 2x 750 amp batteries to cater for the 1500 cca required to start it - the book says that is what it takes to start at up to (or down to) -18c. That will not happen in Australia and after much research and inquiries to Cummins was told that a 1900 amp jump starter should start it, providing it is not dead flat and the temperature is reasonable.
Have not had reason to use it yet but is nice to have on board, just in case.

Cheers
Patto

My jump starter is designated 1900 amps but I think one would have short circuit it before that sort of current would flow.... As the man on the TV said "Don't try this at home!"
