Potential dead bogan. Some people are slow learners, and the rules don't apply to them. Even the rules of physics. Fuel + fire = BOOM!

Yeah !! I was filling up the other day at the servo, when this other guy pulls up, cigarette in his mouth, and starts to fill his car with petrol. Iasked him not to do it while i was there, he was a big bloke and told me to get st-ffed. so i walked away, [ as you would ]

Any way he filled up, the petrol splashed up onto his arm, the cigarette set fire the petrol, and here he is running around and around shaking his arm and screaming for help !!

The servo guy saw what was happening, and came running out with a fire extinguisher, and managed to put it out,!! just as a passing Police car pulled into the station, and spoke to the Idiot, But he also had Attitude with the Cops, and said, you can't arrest someone for being stupid ?? And the copper said that's right !! But !! You are now under arrest, Mr Smart--se said Yeah What For ???? and the copper said ????

Illegal Use Of A Firearm   biggrinbiggrinbiggrin  [ lol ] winkhmmwink sorry could'nt help it

Ha ha, good one Dazren, I was about to mention that you must have been dreaming until I got to the punchline.

You would think that people - especially someone who has worked with fuel for 11 years - would know that it is impossible for a cigarette to ignite petrol whether it is being pumped, in a drum, a puddle on the ground...impossible.

It is therefore quite safe pouring fuel from a drum into your car while smoking and nothing to worry about.

BUT, and a big BUT...do not try to light the ciggy when near petrol, the flame will surely ignite petrol as it has the temperature to do it whereas a ciggy doesn't.

This is the reason, and rightfully so that there are No Smoking signs near fuel as some 'bogan' may be tempted to light up.

Cheers Neil

Dazren's story reminds me of the time a couple were "parking" and being quite amorous when a policeman interrupted them. The women called the policeman just about everything she could think of so the copper arrested the guy, who'd said nothing, for.....(wait for it!).....having an offensive person on his weapon!

I was in a sevo once and a guy was on his mobile. I was giving him 'the look' and a little 'conversation' ensued. Basically he was saying don't believe all you read. I left ASAP, but it did make me wonder if it was true.

One of my mates in Britain years ago was filling the Landrover and as the tank was under the passenger seat the inlet was on top of the tank.  Anyhow he was smoking a pipe and as he filled the tank glowing tobacco fell into the tank which at this time was brimming and the glowing tobacco simply sizzled and went out.

So does that mean it's still dangerous to have a lit ciggie around fuel? What about the mobile phone?

Read the link in my answer above.

Theoretically a cig probably should light the vapours but no-one can make it do it.

As for mobile phones, well, ask Snopes here.

From what I have read there is far more chance of starting fuel fires by static energy, eg filling a jerry can which is not grounded, not touching the fill nozzle to the fuel inlet, getting out of the car with nylon knickers then touching tan open metal tank. evileye etc.

Cheers Neil

No, my son tells me mobile phones won't do it - but best not to risk it. Using a mobile phone may lessen your concentration when using a flammable liquid.

I suspect that the reason is the mobile phone signal might interfere with the wireless signal between the bowser and the cash-register. We cant have that, can we!evileye

Went to change a wheel for the father in law quite a few years back. He had an XA or XB Falcon (I think it was) that had the spare wheel in an indentation in the fuel tank in the boot. When I took the wheel out the rubber was falling apart and dripping with fuel. The tank had rusted and the indent had become a pool of petrol. When I told the father in law he stuck his head in for a look... yep, with a lit ciggy in his mouth.. I just stuck my fingers in my ears... luckily he realised before the whole lot went up.
