A new Australian short film, The Last Race, will be broadcast nationally on ABC1 at 6.30pm on Sunday 26 February 2012 .

This powerful film is inspired by the personal experience of producer Anita Belgiorno-Nettis, whose brother became an organ donor nine years ago.

The Last Race highlights different perspectives of organ donation a family confronted with the sudden death of their son, a young girl whose only chance of a future is receiving a lung transplant and the staff involved in caring for the patients and their families.

The film will be launched by the Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, Catherine King on Wednesday 22 February 2012 in Sydney.

Anita Belgiorno-Nettis is the sole director of Alagna Films and the executive producer and co-producer of The Last Race. Anita was the Executive Producer of the renowned Australian film The Black Balloon, Winner of the Crystal Bear at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival and Winner of Best Picture at the Australian Film Industry (AFI) awards.

This event is part of DonateLife Week, Australias national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation. The theme of this years DonateLife Week is ask and know your loved ones wishes.

The Last Race was made with financial assistance by the Australian Government. The film was shot on location at St Vincents Hospital in Sydney and the development of the film was assisted by a number of experts in the donation and transplantation sectors.

I appreciate the benefits of organ donation, but I just can't watch another program about them. I cry right through the program, and I have the blues for the rest of the day and the next day. I really need cheering up.

This one is a bit different Chris, but if it upsets you then I agree you shouldn't watch it, I understand it is not for everybody.

As someone who donated a left kidney to someone I have a special interest in organ donation, and they can have the rest of me if it is any good when I expire.

A friend of mine heard that the Medical Uni was short of bodies to train their doctors and donated his body to them (medical science) when he died, he was a very dedicated supporter of organ donation after a friend of his died through lack or organ availability.
