When we are away, theres nothing we enjoy more than going off the main drag, my partner loves to put the 4WD to use and we always have a picnic lunch ready. .... Hardly ever do it when at home though. You are right, Zoomtopz, the scenery and the general peace is sooo worth it.
Your right , that is a very good drive , & a great little camp site just when you drop off the Grafton/ Glenn road onto the river. Also some good camps ontop of the range area.

Yestee we went from Grafton up to Glen Innes for their Minerama .
I bought one Clear Crystal . Herself , being 'th rockhound' in th family
bought up pretty well .
So then .
We went up to Glen via Gwyder . Came home via Old Glen Innes Road ,
mostly all dirt pretty narrow in places very hilly . Fantastic scenery . You
get th drift . Heaps of campers along th rivers . Me thinks , I could take a
drive like this Every w/end .
Have to chuckle I sent my daughter and son inlaw that way - mapped them home via places they could stay over with a trailer full of sheep all they could say is that the GPS kept telling them to turn around for K's and they felt sorry for the sheep I wasn't popular for directions after that - the road looks fairly straight on the map

In Tassie we took an inland route somewhere in the Northern side instead of a 20 k trip it was much longer but well worth the drive. We went past some young blue gum plantations that we would not have seen if we had stuck to the main drag.

Have to chuckle again we took an inland track somewhere in the eastern side. the maps said it went through to Mytle bank from the Lilydale side - we saw forest lots of it!! an hour or so later it spat us gratefully back out where we went in!! I knew something was wrong when the cows we passed early in the piece looked at us with that what tha look on their faces
I towed the van from Goulburn to Bathurst through some back track which goes down and up the Abercrombie Ravine. I'll never forget it. Fortunately I know how to drive my truck to get the best out of her. There's a sign at the top advising it wasn't suitable for caravans, BUT no where to turn around, so I pressed on. By the time I arrived at Orbost I think, I was ready for a pint of wine on the rocks with a straw, and no ice. When I parked up at Bathurst I was a wreck. Blow the wine! Pass the Bundy.

We have been needing to get away from Grafton ourselves for a few days & get back to nature so we did the loop from Grafton along the Old Grafton/Glen Innis Rd then back along the Gwyder Hwy past Washpool & along the way checking out all the camping spots.
We're planning the same trip in a week or so and camping for a couple of nights in a private little spot right on the river about 500mtr from the official nat park camping spot near the old town of Dalmorton
It is a magic drive if you don't mind the odd pothole in the dirt section. The scenery compares to any we found on our 2 years travel around Aus

An amendment to my earlier post... we do all this back-track driving Without the van!
Chris I can understand how you felt about that Abercrombie road, also the Wombeyan caves road. Both narrow gravel steep and winding. Thats where we were when my partner had his heart attack... driving him out was a test for me, but we got here ok.
