Hubbie an I are currently house sitting in Tamworth for four weeks. As the are no accommodation expenses we use this to help stretch the budget. We have two nice dogs to look after and a couple of horses in the paddock that we just have to keep a eye on. We also have the chance to explore the surrounding area. Our only cost are the usual food and fuel. Depending on how much exploring you do you can keep your fuel cost down as you are not towing van
Hi Denise, i think this house sitting is a great idea, we have done several in the last 6 years, the longest was 11 months in Adelaide, we then came to Perth and have most of the reast of the year booked from mid May. It saves us a lot of rent and you get to meet many people plus it gives us our animal fix, thats the only thing i don't like about this nomads life we don't have all the animals we usually do. When you only have the pension to live on its one way to get out and see so much that we probably wouldn't be able to afford to do otherwise, plus the home owners save heaps by not having to use boarding kennels etc so it works both ways. Cheers Ailsa
It's a great way to find other destinations, some you may not have considered in your itinerary. It's also a great base from which to tour around a district and to be part of the community, even if it's only for a short stay. Keep up the good work. Where to next?

How does house sitting work. Do you get paid by the home owner ? do you live in the house or in your van? How do you find houses or sitters? As a home owner how do you know who you can trust?
No you don't usually get paid to house sit, but it is usually rent free. Some times you can live in your van parked in the driveway, or you park the van up and live in the house. Finding house sitters or sitting jobs - there's a reference on the front page of this site. There are also some internet sites and agencies to sort sitters out and assess their suitability. It's good to get references along the way for every job so you build up a portfolio of history and references. Some property managers may have properties which need sitting. Trusting someone else with your house is a big gamble really. It's up to you to assess prospective sitters. I did a bit of housesitting in Broome. One of the houses, the one I didn't sleep at, was broken into 3 times in the one night, by the same mother and her young children climbing through the little dunny window. Very common in Broome. Sometimes there are animals to look after as well. Enjoy. So get to work to find a sitting job. Good luck and have fun with it.
