Scammer tried to 'buy' my Gypsy.

Yep, wasn't surprised at all.

As usual it was the wording that made it obvious.

Hi, its very annoying. beware of the scam:  I live in Sydney, Adelaide wherever, I want your item, what are your bank account details so I can send you money. A way out of this rot is tell them to go to the post office and get a postal note and have it sent to you asap. after you have cashed it, then they can have the item. they won't call back. rocket n strop

Make that 2 scammers. Had a different one text me. This one didn't even know what he was 'buying',,metioned a car!

The negative side of advertising on the internet.

I've just ignore them, but if they text again, I'll tell them to do that.

Thanks Rocket n Strop.

Gee it's so hard to trust these days. As much as we'd like to give people the benefit of the doubt, we just can't afford to.
Be careful Beth and no trailer until you see the colour of their money.
Stay safe.

rocket n strop, not a good idea to get a postal note, because they then have your home address

whenever I sell on Gumtrees I always put email replies only, cash sale only, and I do not include a phone number, and when they email me and want to see the item I ask for the suburb they live in and arrange to meet at a nearby park or shopping centre, NEVER give out your home address or phone number.

It does restrict your sale but I find it's a safe way of doing the sale

Hi wombat, that's a top idea of yours also. the rest of my idea : not to give my address but the address of the post office. makes me cranky when we want to sell something in good faith and these #%@%#% waste our time. i tried selling recently and got one bloke at least ten calls in 24 hours and then there were the txt messages from others and other emails. finally, we cancelled ad, lost money on ad and sold to a dealer. good luck everyone wanting to sell something.

maybe good to have a sale/swap on this site.

Yep, same thing happened to us when we attempted to sell our tinny - and although we didn't get 'top dollar' we decided to just trade it in on the one we were really after. These crumbs are unreal - just take care Beth.

 Yep, exact words Smokey. evileye

Wombat, thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to put cash sale only on the ad. I see no benifit in using email rather than phone, I'd still get the same c**p in an email as I've had in texts.

For now, I have it advertised on Gumtree, Simple Traders and Quokka...all free ads.

After a week, I thought I'd just pay for an ad and go with ebay. Went through the whole thing filling it all in, got to the very end, the paypal bit, and discovered one has to pay paypal with a credit or visa card. I don't have either. Grrr!furious Trading Post is the same!

Makes me cranky that companies expect everyone to have a credit card! furious

There was a story on one of the current affairs programs last night about a town in Romania. They called it scam city or hackers city, something like htat anyway.
The whole town runs on scamming from the internet and Australia is their biggest victim. As soon as one scam is sorted and stopped they have thought of another one.
The reason Aussie is the biggest is because we use the internet for shopping and banking etc more than any other country.

Last week, I listed our van on Trading Post and have had one email scam response and one text message one. Probably lucky that there's only been 2!

Selling the van has been a tough decision to make, but the reality is that the driver's health issues (heart) preclude any more tripping. At least, we got out there whilst still in our 50's, explored a lot of the country and had some great adventures.

Wendy, it's a shame you have to tie up. I'm glad you had the opportunity to do some kms before the health issues decided your future travel plans.
All the best with the van sales. Another emotional decision. There's no doubt a lot of memories in that box.

Hi Beth, Because of the hassles we have had on the net we decided that next time we sell we would put it in a paddock not far from home that is on a main road with a sale sign on it. could work. lots of other people sell their cars, boats, vans this way. rocket n strop

Rocket n strop,,,I did think about putting it in the front yard of someone I know, who lives on a major road, but it's also a bad area for thieves and graffiti 'artists'. Didn't want to risk it.

We've had 14 years since early retirement, and had the van all that time. Obviously, weren't travelling all the time, and have done very little the past couple of years. But, yes, you are right - lots of memories in the box on wheels. Time now for someone else to use it to make their memories.

We sold our last van on Trading post. Had 2 scammers, but, as you said.. their spelling gave them away. We found trading post has a section you can go to, that has known scammers names on it.

I've got my van on the market at the moment, Gumtree and Trading Post, will also put it on Quokka.

In regards to payment, if done by a legitimate Bank Cheque (which can still be cancelled by the buyer by the way, so not completely safe), is it normal to hand over the goods to the buyer in exhange for the bank cheque at the time or can you insist on waiting for the cheque to clear?

Maybe give them a receipt for the bank cheque stating that it is for the full price of the van subject to clearance, van stays with you until cleared?

Last van I sold, I made the seller go to his bank with me and transfer the money into my account, then gave him the goods.  His bank also gave me a letter to say the money had been transferred.   He wasn't very happy with it though and it caused some ill feeling as he just wanted to pay with a bank cheque and take the goods immediately.

(Smokey, thanks for that list of scammers, even though hot mail and gmail used for most, the addressee's looked more legit than most of the overseas etc ones I've seen that stand out like dog's projections.....)

Vic, you MUST wait until the cheque has cleared, and keep the van until that has been done, just explain to the buyer that the last bank cheque you were given was cancelled and you lost money, if you explain this to them before they decide to buy then they cannot complain.
