Make sure yu have plenty of drinking water. Especially in areas that have had flooding......even the town water can be a bit horrid still in these areas.
save gas by putting the boiling water for that second cup into a thermos.
cook rice in a wide mouth thermos.....ratio is 1;3 that is one measure of rice to three measures of boiling water. Good idea to swish some water around to warm the thermos first. Rice cooks well this way and stays warm too.
Finding I am able to swap books also.

Dawa
Hi Dawa, great ideas. I did not know you could cook rice in a thermos. do you just boil water, and put rice and water in thermos? if yes. for how long? thanks. rocket n strop
I cook a pot of brown rice, pack it in small zip bags and freeze. Thaw and heat as required. I also do this with wholemeal pasta. I don't do the cook every meal every day thing. I enjoy a major cook up about every 3 weeks. Last week I roasted a variety of vegetables with olive oil and some seeds, pine nuts, pepitas, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds. Then packed to freeze. I buy a chook, cut up and pack in zip bags to freeze, then thaw and heat as required.

Also for that cuppa later in the morning, especially if on the road

I've found this works ok in a Shuttle Chef (or Dreampot) too

PS: I use Basmati too, I think it's as nice a rice as any regardless of its lower GI. Doongara also suitable for diabetics. Avoid Jasmine if GI is an issue.

Great tips Granny and Dawa, thanks. Love brown rice which takes 3 times as long to cook so maybe the brown rece would be ready by dinner if in the thermos.
And what about your planned movements when travelling ?
As I am an early riser, I like to leave early and arrive early at my intended destination by lunch time or early afternoon .. after restocking of supplies if necessary on the way.
If for some reason I have to travel a really long distance, I still like to arrive as early as possible, so I will leave in the early hours of the morning .. yes .. in darkness if necessary .. Road traffic is most often very light and I've had a good sleep .. I travel slowly being well aware of animals that frequent the night and stop somewhere for beakfast as the sun rises .. all part of what makes this life-style so enjoyable for me ..
An easy way to cook brown rice is to cover it water so that the water is about 5 cm above the height of the rice. Bring the pot to the boil in a pot with a tight fitting lid then turn off the heat and let the rice absorb the water (at least a couple of hours). If there is still water on top or the rice isn't soft enough repeat the process. Sometimes you need to add more water to get really soft rice. Glad to know your trip is going well dawa. I'm still planning to get out there - city life doesn't suit me much.
Hi Elle, nice to hear from you. I leave Oz just after Easter and will be back in August. I'm going to Ireland to see my daughter and doing some European travel while I'm there. When I get back I'm thinking I'll head for the Flinders Ranges. I would love to take a flight out over Lake Eyre. I read in the paper it will be in flood for the fourth year in row. The country out there must be changing so much with all that water - definitely a 'must see' for me. How about you? How are your travel plans going? Also - how's the road dawa?
Yes it sounds like Dawa is having a great time. Very inspiring to hear how well she's doing. Yes I agree getting up to Lake Eyre this year might not be possible. All the best when you do get away - I'm sure you'll find some great adventures awaiting you out there. I'm off OS tomorrow so I won't be posting for a while.
