Stanage Bay

Great place, great fishing and crabbing. you can , last time I was there, free camp at plumtree, which is right across the road from the pub and shop. Sandflies are a pest, but the scenery is spectacular. There is track, just out of town to the top of a hill , and you can see forever. Islands are in every direction. The tides are huge, and you can hire reasonable boats from the shop.Big jewfish(and sharks) out in the channel on whole squid.50 miles of dirt road, with the country similar to the Gulf or NT.Lovely spot. Stanage bay is about 150miles nth of Rockhampton, QLD.Bill

I'm about 45mins. north of there at the moment.  If you E-mail

plumtreestore@bigpond.com.au

you should get up-to-date info on road conditions.     The weather might not have been too kind to it in the last week.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Hi all, thanks for the response that I have got from you all so far. Once again I have some questions has anyone on here camped at Stanage Bay. We are planning on going there but have had conflicting reports about it. Would like to now from someone that has been there. Second question has anyone travelled with a tent and 4x4. We have been camping for a fortnight here and there but we are planning on spending at least 4 months this time. We do have a pretty good set up though. Looking forward to your comments

Hello WMB,

Stanage Bay, what can I say? The road in is ok most of the time, been in with the van once, road good.

Not my choice of fishing places as you will need a fairly good boat, mine was too small. There are big tides, fast water and dangerous shoals.

For the novices like we were then it was bit daunting. There are some good camping spots, some without facilities.

We had a problem with sand flies and mossies. We spent a week there and had fun but I now know of many other places to got to which I prefer.

If you had some local contacts you would be much better off than we were.

Great scenery and headlands, bush walks and some facilities. Good Pub.

I would not camp too close to the water in a tent.

Well worth the drive in for a look around.

Stanage Bay is on the coast from Marlborough in Queensland. We wont be there till about the middle of May so hopefully it will have dried out by then. In regards to the  comment about not camping too close to the water is the big lizards there.

Cheers

The turn-off is just North of the old Kunwarara Servo., on the right-hand side, as you go around the bend.

Approx. 20 minutes South of Marlborough.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Lovely place... we stayed there for about a week. fishing was off but it was well worth the effort to get there. As others have said though, check the road conditions before you decide to go in.
