To do it online you still need a residential address somewhere. When I was in Cairns for 2 years I re-registered my car in WA with a SA postal address. I pay online. I used my daughter's post box as my address, I set her up with prepaid bags and she would forward the mail to the address I told her, and I'd get it in a couple of days. I did a lot of travel in 2007-08 all around the country, so I'd get mail in Lakes Entrance, Eden, Moree, Bribie Island for example. The registration? I'm still registered in WA. Because I live in a van full time, located long-term in a van park at the moment, I'm considered to be itinerant so they don't fuss about state of registration. At election time you can choose not to vote in state elections if you're not in that state, but you MUST vote in federal elections, where ever you are, for whatever seat your registered in. eg Registered in northern WA, voting in Cairns. Absentee vote for whoever in WA.
There are postal forwarding services for a fee of course.

How do you re-register your vehicle, vehicle insurance and anything else, on a yearly basis, if you don't have a permanent address like a house, for the Road Traffic Licensing Branch to send your new drivers license to?
Will the RTA send your new drivers license to a Caravan Park address instead, if you stay in one for a short time, to allow the snail mail to catch up with you?
Welcome to the forum mate. There are a few threads on this topic. A lot depends on which state you live in. WA seems to be the most flexible and it is possible to say rent a post box and nominate a physical address for garaging especially if you choose a rural area where they do not have a mail service and then everything is done on line. There are complications you have to deal with but they can be overcome with some thought. Just do your research and continue to ask questions.
I met someone at 80-mile beach in WA in 2010 who told me he visits a caravan park down in the south of WA once a year and they let him use their place as his official address.
I joined the Winnebago club (you don't have to have a Winnie) for $40 pa and they have a free mail forwarding service. My Winnie is registered in Tassie and I just gave the registration people the Winnebago Club forwarding address. They were OK with that as we still have a property in Tassie, although have been living in Qld for many years. You should be able to give them a different mailing address to whatever garaging address you give them. With all the people permanently on the road nowadays without a permanent address I think the rego people are going to have to change their regulations to accommodate them. Cheers! Chris
We have the same dilemma. We have only been on the road fulltime for 10 days and already have run into the drama of no home address. Ordinary mail is no problem as re-direction is fairly easy to arrange. We are trying to get a passport for a future trip to New Zealand but we have no (willing) relatives or (reliable) friends who we could ask to use their address as our home address. Also driver's licences and registrations are going to be a problem. Surely we aren't the only ones in this situation? What do others do?
I went through all this recently. Bottom line is you need a permanent street address for rego (garaging), insurance, license, electoral roll, medicare and other things. I had no relative willing to let me use their address, and no reliable friends... that was until I found one. I asked one of the regulars on my blog and he was quite happy to let me use his street address. So it's a matter of finding someone. Just make a list of all the people you know, even the unlikely ones, and ask. PO addresses are not acceptable (at least in NSW). It's also important that the person who does allow you to use their address is familiar with the internet and email so that you can be advised of any mail that arrives.

RIP Elle wherever you are in the universe, we miss your words of wisdom.
(Footnote for new members, Elle passed away awhile back)
Did you notice Elle's signature... rarin' to go? Thanks for the update, Vic. Reminds me of a show on telly I saw a while ago about a retirement home for British ex-servicemen. One said he was reluctant to make new friends there because you'd no sooner get used to them and attached, than they'd fall off the perch.
