Kindle magic

I bought myself a Kobo reader when we were on our 12 month trip around this wonderful country of ours, found it fantastic until I then purchased an I pad, now use this for all my reading. Was able to download all my purchased and cfee books from my kobo to my ipad. My kobo was not a wifi one so that is why I found the ipad so much more convenient. Tony, Mrs Tony had one of the latest Kindles with wifi so should be wonderful. As usual, I jump in too quickly, should have waited for the newer e readers. Glenda

Got Mrs Tony a Kindle for her birthday yesterday and she has got it up and working and has already bought and downloaded a book from Amazon. It was just sitting on a table. No wires or computer connection. Frankly I find it a bit spooky!

Came with a DVD claimed to hold 29,500 books. That should keep her quiet for a few days!

Wonderful gadget and I can see another one wending its way to Perth very soon.

Cheers, Tony

It uses the "Wi-Fi" connection on your computer or network modem to connect. If it cannot find the Wi-Fi or it is not set up it will then use a 3G connection to download. If you turn off the Wi-Fi connection on the Kindle (via the Main menu on the Home page) and only turn it on when downloading you'll save battery power.

Also if you hold the switch for about 15 seconds (I think) when switching the Kindle off it will shut it down completely including the screen saver. I think this is a requirement for air travel. This may also save battery power but I'm not sure.

E book reading is fantastic. I brought a Samsung tab and you can download books to it. Haven't tried yet but will soon cause I love reading and now there's no need to collect a heap of heavy books.

Hi  Jim just thought it might be worth adding that the 3g is a free internet connection, and can also be used as a browser although not verry user freindly.

My daughter-in-law uses her kindle to read while feeding the baby. Much easier than a book she says. But she still drops the kindle when she falls asleep!!! Haha

Thanks Landy, forgot to mention that, also that I don't think 3G is available on the basic model, mine's the "Keyboard" model and I'm glad I bought that one.

I agree with your comments about internet browsing but we need to keep in mind this is not its purpose.

I have stored some personal information on mine to save me carrying some paperwork when I travel. This is password protected and uses PDF format.

Jim

PS: Also forgot to mention that if there's no 3G or Wi-Fi, e-books can be downloaded to your computer and copied across to the Kindle.

L-O-V-E my e-reader!!!! Travels everywhere with us, and I have since found out that through our local library we can 'borrow' and download recent books using our library card for up to 21 days, before they 'disappear' and return to the e-library. Great, another avenue for getting books without the weight!

I bought a basic e reader last year and I love it, especially when travelling.
However I recently bought a Motorola Xoom Tablet. Now I am really in love with it. I find it easer to read, and with wifi and 3 g it is much better when travelling so I can still access the net. Good for email, banking, research and booking van sites. I download all my books on both so if one battery dies I still have the other until I can get somewhere to recharge. Gotta love toys and tecnology.
