DASH CAMERAS

The truckies are using them.

Taxis are using them.

Looks like a good idea.  Some of the vision recorded shows narrow misses, and hits, but it establishes who was at fault fairly quickly.

Would you install one?

Looked at them on the Web. a while back. I might if I can afford one.  Gotta get the Airlifters first.

Cheers,

Sheba.

I think they could be a good addition to your vehicle.

I think they could also be a money maker, sell footage to the news media who are always on the lookout for footage.

Callous maybe but it could save you money in a disputed incident if the footage showed what actually happened.

Safe travels.

I think that was the original idea. That's the way it came across when I first saw them on TV.

Cheers,

Sheba.

I think they are a great idea and if you are into making your own slide shows you can add footage into them from these cameras, makes them a bit more interesting.

No I wouldn't instal one. Some of the reasons are:

- another distraction to driving and to living life in the moment;

- you have to leap at it to preserve the record of what happened;

- it is intrusive of privacy and while others do it I choose not to join them. In fact I'd like most video camera of public and private operators ripped out; and

- there are five million other things I want, the first being time.

The dash and console of our tug is already littered with GPS, Reversing camera screen, UHF radio, caravan braking gadget, not to mention the coffee in the keep-hot cups, tissue box, etc etc. No room for a dash camera!

johnq, there is no distraction, the unit just sits behind your sun visor.

you do not have to leap to turn it on, it records to an sd card for 4 hours and then starts over again, there is no need to touch it once in place, I am talking about the ones that cost about $200-$300 not the cheap ones on eBay for $40

a lot of peolpe say things like this are intrusive of privacy, if you are doing nothing wrong then I see no problem in being filmed, in fact I think it helps to fight crime.

One big problem I see with is that you would need to remove it every time you left your car or you may have a smashed windscreen when you return to your car, because some bugga wanted the camera.

In answer to CG, yes I have been looking at them but do not want to buy on eBay, I would like to see one in a store and see the quality of the footage, although my research does indicate that 1080p is the quality of some units, be careful what you buy there maybe a lot of crap units out there, as always do your research.

GD, this camera sits between the rear vision mirror and the windscreen so you do not see it, it should not be called a dash camera

Freelance is for people who do not work for anyone in particular....get the film...the writings (as you did), or the photos.

But it is NOT FREE...unless you do not sell it wink

Still freelance...but only free if you don't get to sell your work...then you give it up and go and do another job biggrinbiggrin

Like when I did some freelance work on your van in Cairns and didn't get paid    smilesmile

hubby got his on the net they plug into the ciggy lighter and work a treat hes used his for ages now
and its amazing what he shows me one woman followed him to work and abused him for not letting her
in on the highway, well excuse me how is a bloody huge truck suppose to slow down for you to get into the lane
if you dont know how to murge then stop and wait.

she abused hubby and he said lady if you like ring the coppers cos she said she was going to, and he said see that
little black box on the front of my truck window its a camera ,and then we can talk about it, she walked off in a huff
he only paid 50 dollars each for them and they hold a small card that you put into your computer to watch ,once they are
full up they override the previous stuff as far as i know.

I have one and love it !!

It is NOT intrusive as it sits behind my rear view mirror.

You do NOT have to leap and save anything as my card allows me to save it for up to 36 hours. So if anything does happen, all I do is note the time, put the SD card into my laptop at a later time and save it to my Laptop. All good.

I have not had to save anything, but all I know is it will be there if needed as I wish I had one 2 years ago !!

I reckon everyone should have one !!

I already have an Etag up on my windscreen behind the RV mirror.
There are versions which sit on the dash like a GPS, and others attack to windscreen. One I have seen is attached to the pillar, but I wouldn't mount it on the driver's side.
I don't know how much money you'd make. The media are very selective about what they pay for.
That's why freelance journalism has the emphasis on "FREE".

Freelance does not mean Free biggrin

I can fit both my Etag and my dash cam behind the mirror...the cam just pops a little below as I had to drop it a little bit as I have a chip in the windscreen...confuse

Oh, dear Gary, after writing for 12+ years as a correspondent for a number of media, and effort is not rewarded.
Magazines do pay quite well, especially if you have pictures, but the work I did was for ABC, commercial radio and local TV news and I can tell you I had to write to sell the stuff 3 different ways to make it worth my while.
So in all my experience with freelance, the emphasis is on FREE, almost.

Thank you to wombat and Gary (Dunco) for correcting some misleading impressions I had been given about the utility of newer dash cameras.

Although wombat, I still disagree with your "if you are doing nothing wrong then I see no problem in being filmed" as an argument against complaints of intrusion of privacy. No worries, we all differ.

Still not getting one. :)

Johnq, it would be a very strange world if we all thought alike, you are entilted you your opinion as I am entitled to mine and I do not mean that in an aggresive way, and it is your choice if you do not get one, there is nobody forcing you to do that.

take care and stay safe on the road.
