You don't have to be gray, I'm not (thanks to modern hairdressing technology) Sounds like you guys are quite Nomads already though. Hope you continue to enjoy your travels around this great country of ours. If you need to know anything, the peeps on here are sure to have the answers for you.

Cheers!

I don't feel old enough to be on a Grey Nomads forum being only 39 but the topics on here are much more to my needs than other forums and such so I hope you don't mind.
If anyones interested, my wife, 2yo son and I have a Landrover Discovery and a Jayco camper that we have done and will continue doing many trips in, we've done the red centre, just got back from Adelaide a few weeks ago, spent quite a bit of time traveling through out NSW but most of our travels are more around the Vic High country Gippsland and coastal areas.
As my nick name would suggest I am a mechanic and I have my own onsite business so if anyone needs advice I'm happy to give it free of charge.
Hi Damien, Welcome to the forum also. Hey I am a blonde, must be of the same gene pool as Chris. LOL. I don't think age has anything to do with finding out the best way to go about things, the "oldies" have wisdom and experience, they youngun's have a whole new way of looking at things and know about technical stuff that the over 50's probably do not. We all have something to learn and share. Welcome to you and your family.
Sharon.

Hey Chris, the best way to get 50mpg out of an Isuzu would be to only travel down hill hahahaha.
Or if it's a turbo look at LPG fumigation, that will bump the economy up a little and a light right foot and sit in the aerodynamic efficient zone (about 25kmh in a motor home) will help but considering your driving a big brick with a parachute on it's back, I doubt you will ever see 50mpg.
Another option would be to look at using WVO (Waste Vegie Oil).
Plenty of fish and chip shops around the traps, grab 20ltrs here and there and blend with dino diesel will lessen the blow a bit.
Welcome to the Forum - age is just a number!! Grey is a matter of choice and has been for sometime!! Just have fun and enjoy your time with us.
Thanks to all for the lovely welcomes.
I was talking to my wife before about what I posted and then we reaslised that by 10pm I'm ready for bed, she sits watchcing TV knitting and we do seem to travel around a lot more than most of our friends.
Maybe age is only a number and maturity is what really counts.....
I sound like my dad.....Mmmmm is that a bad thing.
Anyway, many thanks again for the welcome and I would be happy to help with any questions if I know the answer, if i don't I will endeavour to find someone who will as I alsways like to learn something new.

Hi Doug
I have to put my foot down otherwise the darn thing won't move. However, I am very gentle and try to keep around 90kph. As for "peeping Toms"....don't think I will go there.
Damien
Thanks for the tips, unfortunately it doesn't have a turbo. Have wondered about the vegie oil, but would be very concerned about what it might be doing to my engine. Has it been sufficiently tested yet?
Cheers!

hi damien welcome, I am also a disco driver, td5 with a chip and gas. you are certainly right about the gas extending the fuel range. I have also done a lot of outback travel and its what I enjoy most. cheers blaze ps also a spanner man
Sounds like we may have to start a new thread on alternative fuels.
WVO has been used in diesel engines since it was a concept and was run on Peanut oil.
There are modifacations that need to be made, if you are running 100% or Bio Diesel as it can react with some types of rubber and plastics and to run 100% WVO you would need to add a heater in the tank so that it can be heated to thin it out.
Mixing with Dino Diesel (say 50/50) is perfectly fine in 90% of cases as long as you have a steel or alloy tank and steel lines with brass banjo fittings.
I wouldn't run WVO in a high pressure single rail or multi point electronic like the TD5 but in that case you could run Bio Diesel and as long as it is made correctly and the acidity dropped it would be fine.
As I said, maybe in another thread we could continue this.
My understanding is that the older diesel engines are fairly tolerant of unrefined vegetable oils but the newer common rail engines don't like it. There are many resins in the various oils and my understanding is that the solid ones that have to be heated have less nasties in them that coat the cylinder walls, than the naturally liquid oils. But that is only an impression I have formed from what I have read. There may be more to it than that.
Of course I am talking about unrefined vegetable oil here. Bio Diesel is a different matter. Properly refined, it should be suitable for any diesel motor according to what I have read.
