Saturday and the plan was to take Steven to the start of the Tanami Trail where he wants to hitch to Wolfe Creek to see the meteorite crater and back to the highway and then on to the Bungle Bungles none of which I can do with the Hi Ace. The idea is to link up again at Katherine on Thursday to continue through Kakadu and up to Darwin. My trip for the day was to go to Halls Creek and on to Spring Creek Rest Area Camps6 #643 around 300kms. It is a lovely spot on the river with shady trees and an area for big rigs above the river area. Could not gain internet at Halls Creek because the Visitor Centres system was down and I couldnt get it on my laptop either. Sure enough Jeremy and Anthony arrived later and invited me to share their dinner, I still havent started cooking since Bali so it was a change to have cooked vegetables instead of from cans.
Sunday and I set off towards Wyndham in no hurry it was only 260kms away, whilst Jeremy and Anthony stopped at the road to the Bungle Bungles trying to get a hitch. I arrived at The Grotto a camp site in The guide to free camping in the north of WA #143 it is a pretty spot with a spectacular staircase carved into the rock leading into a deep pool below. It was mid day and I climbed down the staircase and swam in the pool taking my lunch with me. I climbed back up at 2pm and decided to go in to Wyndham to have a look round and return to the grotto to camp. Jeremy and Anthony arrived whilst I was in Wyndham and were down in the pool. They took their fishing rods down into the pool at dusk and caught several fish but only one was legal and they had to climb back up in the moonlight.
Monday morning and I can't believe that I was up til midnight playing Texas Holdem Poker with Jeremy and Anthony, never played before but soon found how to lose. They play for big stakes, the loser has to cook the next days meal and for the second game the loser has to do the day's washing up. Up early and went down to the Grotto to catch a fish but only succeeded in feeding them, not to worry, climbed back up again and set off for Kununurra. I am parked at a Lions Park on the Ord River some 5 kms before Kununurra with the luxury of having
The Grotto is a great place, complete with steps carved into the rock wall. I saw it in full flow in the wet season. That Spring Creek Rest Area sounds like Mary's Pool. Same area it seems. Stay safe.
