Welcome Bondy. I'm sure someone will have an answer to your question. We don't know.

My understanding is if you are a pensioner you are covered for all ambulance cover.

If you have a paid ambulance membership in one state it covers you for the other states as well.

Not quite. However, if you have whatever Ambulance cover applies in your "home" state, you are covered all over Oz.
In Qld it's included in your vehicle rego.
In SA you pay to SA Ambulance.
Some states it's covered by RAC? membership.
So it's not a national policy, but one state's membership covers you all over.
You are also covered by The Royal Flying Doctor if, heaven forbid, you should need it out bush. It's a wonderful service which is NOT supported by any government. They exist on fundraising and membership and volunteers.
Now there's worthy cause.

In Victoria you pay for a yearly membership. Each of my children when they became independent I paid for their first years membership then told them to kept it paid up in future years.

That scheme was scrapped as at 1 July 2011 - http://www.ambulancecover.qld.gov.au/

 Marj,

My understanding is that pensioners are covered for 'emergency transportation'.

It concerns me that they do not define ' emergency'. Consequently we have taken out ordinary cover as well just to be safe.

Thats interesting Robyn. Have needed to call for an ambulance and it was an emergency, not sure why I would call one if it wasn't. Would have been interesting if they had sent me an account.

The call centre people ask the question when you call for an Ambulance to determined what level the emergency is , This call is then rated to what the response is road speed or lights and siren , If you have a cold or sore toe and just want transport to hospital to see a doctor they will tell you to get a taxi, in the past people have treated Ambulances has Taxi , they now will only do transport of people if you have a letter from a doctor stating transport is needed

There's a pensioner rate for SA, but it's not free.
Most emergency calls are free anyway.
It's another confusing issue between states.
Let's have a national standard. So many people are all over the country travelling and working or just relocating.

This is how they determine if you are a Qld resident :

If you answer YES to any of these questions, then you would be covered:

  • Are you registered to vote in Queensland?; or
  • Is your driver's licence issued in Queensland?; or
  • When lodging your tax return do you use a Queensland address; or
  • Is your pension card issued in Queensland?

Refer to Qld Ambulance : http://www.ambulance.qld.gov.au/subscribe/faq.asp

Interesting: Just looked at that link and noticed this:

Yes. All Queensland residents will enjoy free ambulance cover throughout Australia.

My question is, What if you're not exactly a *resident* but a nomad?
