Trend emerging at free camps along Murray river

We like to go to the MR every few weeks for the peace and serenity the river offers. Our favorite spot is at Walker Flat.

Two weeks ago we arrived around 2pm and set up camp. There was a poptop ahead of me and another ahead of him. About 2.30pm 2 cars of 20 something turned up with 4 boys and 1 girl. They were playing their music but not very loud until around 9pm and then bunked down for the night. Nice young people.....wrong!!. They were the advance guard for another 2 cars Sat. am.

From 10am til 4pm they had the car doors open and playing DEF LEPARD (they don't sing, they SCREAM) so loud that the car speakers were distorting. Drunk as skunks by midday, one of the girls was still in her pup tent about 30 metres away from their camp site. So clever dicks with their Toyota 4wd drove up to her tent and pushed the bull bar onto the tent, then revved up the engine to screaming point trying to scare her out of the tent (which she did eventually). Then in their frenzy proceeded to do donuts with 2 cars.

About 5pm one of the morons went to the rubbish bins opposite me, so I went to talk to him. It started out well enought talking about camping and solar panels etc, then I said that from 10am their music was unnecessary loud and if they are goind to "party"tonight could they at least keep the music down. His reply was "when we party, we party". I advised him they have a right to party, and the rest of us have a right to peace and quiet and we have to find a middle ground. As he turned and walked away he muttered "good luck finding the middle ground".

Around 8.30 I had to ring the police because of the noise and the cars roaring up and down doing handbrake turns near us oldies.

A friend advised us this is becoming a normal practice in a lot of freecamps along the river.

This generation has already had some sites closed and this will probably be the next one. I wish I still had my Belgian SLR so I could shoot their parents.

Its sad that some of the younger generation have lost respect and courtesy, or have never been taught it. Its a pity that a few spoil it for everyone.

Walker Flat is one of the most beautiful places on the Murray. I have a brother that lives there and I have camped there a few times but never had any trouble, tho I am usually there mid week not w/ends. Stayed at Manumn camp a couple of months ago, lots of young people there but again no problem and that was a w/end. I must be lucky!

We've learned to camp at places like that on week-days and in school terms. That way we have a better chance of peace and quiet.

At the moment I'm still working full time and have to wait another 18 months before I can retire, and yes we have worked out it's best to stay at home while others are on holidays.

We stayed at Walkers Flat, and found it to be peaceful during the week, but then at the weekend, there were lots of speed boats etc. But no loud music or hooning. That was back in Feb.
