I've been "off the air" with GM for quite a few months, as I found Albany a great place to take a break. However, after a recent 6 week motorcycling trip across Oz, I decided to buy a small "live in vehicle" again, and take off. It is a four cylinder, diesel, 1991 T3500 Mazda.
It was a small passenger bus, which is mechanically A!. Anyway, along with a good mate, we took all the seats out, refloored it, and built in cupboards, and couple of single beds, a table and two chairs. (I travel alone, as a rule.) Next, a retired auto electrician fitted two solar panels on the roof, after we had put that special heatproof paint. Next it was the two deep cell batteries, plus the cranking battery.
A small sink was added, then a portable two burner stove which is almost always used outside so as I don't smell up my "new home". Next, the expense of a very nice roll out awning, plus an Engel fridge. I am ready to go. But NO. Because all the work WASN'T done by licensed professionals, I can't find an insurance company to insure my home. I've told them it has NO, 240 volt inlet. NO GAS fitted, but they still say NO !! To say the least, I am bloody furious, as I can't even get third party. Can anybody HELP !!??
Is the problem lack of engineering certification? Because where you modify a vehicle even by removing seats you could be defected by Dpet of Transport or police anyhow. Might be worth a call to an automotive engineer to get advice and find out what is involved. Here is an example from Google: http://www.mobilityengineering.com.au/certification.htm
