Darwin

Went to the jumping crocodile tour and  was not disappointed, the guide told us that it was high tide and the crocodiles would be hard to see in the mangroves. Later there would be sandbanks exposed and the crocs sun themselves but that didnt stop some of the crocs swimming out to the boat to get some meat and give us plenty of photo opportunities. One Brutus, a huge 5 mtre male got very close and inspected us from just the other side of the safety rail, his lunging for the meat shook the boat. Most of the action was recorded in video will see if I can post it to the blog.
After we drove down to Fogg Dam to have a look at the bird life there of no interest to me but Steven was impressed. This is our first view of any wetlands for many thousand kilometres and the green is amazing to see after so much dry soil.
We now are in Darwin having booked into a tourist resort for $39 per night for a powered site. Made the booking for 2 nights so that we can have a good look around Darwin, my plans for another trip to Bali have collapsed because the flight was over $400 return and the best price for storing the van was $200. Disappointed of course but after the $550 cost to repair the van a couple of days ago it would put me in a tight position if anything else untoward happened.  John

We drove back to Darwin via the coast and a few photo opportunities. The Botanical Gardens were on the way to the city so we stopped and did the rainforest loop then rested under some huge trees.
Steven had picked out a city walk around 4kms covering the main points of interest so we did the walk and by then it was time to visit a couple of pubs the first was a couple of lemon, lime & bitters to slake my thurst then I really surprised myself in the second by ordering a Gallianos shot  followed by a B52 (Gallianos, Baileys and Cointreau) in a shot glass. We got back to the park by 8pm a new experience for me driving in the dark but we had an excellent day and I have now got a deep admiration for the city of Darwin.
It is so well laid out with gardens and beaches it also has the water to ensure that the gardens are green, with its laid back outlook and unhurried pace I would live there but the summer would be a another thing it is hot even in May.   JohnDarwin+007.JPG

I really love Darwin too, but couldn't live there in the summer! Maybe I could move there for the winter and travel south for the summer! A bit too far from the family is probably the only reason for not moving north. Glad to see you have been moving along at a good rate and Litchfield is beautiful isn't it!

I'm in Darwin at the moment too. My old home town. There's so much to do here in the dry, from free Swing dance lessons on theNightcliff foreshore to the Mary River folk festival on the June weekend, need more than a few days. I'm in the top end til August or so, so good to be warm after the chill of the Adelaide Hills.

 Hi Barb,

thanks for your hospitality, the coffee was excellent. We had a swim at the waterfront and set off to Kakadu.

I'm visiting Darwin in July, it will be the 10 years since I was there, which is the most economical caravan park to stay now or is it better to stay in Howard Springs.

Welcome Lawson. I hope you enjoy your stay on Grey Nomads. Maybe we'll catch up one day on the long and winding road.
Safe and happy travels.

Hi Lawson and welcome to the forum. I found no economical caravan park in Darwin and stayed at the Hidden Valley Tourist Resort. It cost $39 per night for a powered site for two of us. Two nights was enough and we set off to Kakadu.
